Paid "Under" the table

Re: Paid \"Under\" the table

behind me in my avatar is the ruins of an industry. the old packard plant. good riddance. note the trees growing out the roof.

Re: Paid \"Under\" the table

undeclared income made it hard for me to borrow money for equipment or a house. A banker buddy told me to start paying my taxes and loaned me 5 grand for my first chipper. He also told me to come back after a couple of years of paying taxes and borrow for a home which worked out well. By my figuring I spent over75 grand cash money on rent before buying- probably more.

Re: Paid \"Under\" the table

thanks guys, everything your saying makes sense, im going to confront my boss about it and tell him i need to be on the books, if not for the full amount i make at least 3/4 of it, then he can pay me the rest under the table, the biggest problem is that i am only on the books for 20 hours, if i can push him to the full 40 i can see that opening a lot of doors for me

skew, can i have your friends number? i need friends like you have, it seems like everyone wants to borrow off of me, not the other way around. what you said about buying a chipper and truck and starting my own business is yet another reason i need to get on the books, i have a client sheet building up and its getting to a point where it soon wont make sense for me not to start my own company, i went to a heavy equipment auction a couple of weeks ago and watched a near new vermeer 18inch chipper go for a measly 7,000 bucks, now if that isnt incentive enough for me to start to save i dont know what it

thanks again guys

Re: Paid \"Under\" the table

it sounds like your already started your own business. All you need is the attitude that your current boss is your best customer. He is already paying you under the table part time. This means he is a cash customer. It doesnt need to get him in trouble if you declare it. This will allow you also to write off your equipment purchases as business expenses. Any tax software that you can buy at office max does all that for you. Be a sole propieter, dont worry about employees yet. Work for the companies that treat you best f the others. The nice thing about our line of work is that as long as there r trees there is work.

I have never seen a problem with finding work. Getting paid a lot, being effecient etc.. thats another story. That is all a skill that can be aquired i think. I hope...

What Im saying is its easy to go to work everyday with out having a boss.

I was taught a neat little trick to keep track of all my income easily. I deposit 10% of every check or wad of cash I recieve into a savings acount. cant touch it.
This way I know very easily how much I have grossed by tacking on 2 zeros. All my business purchases I do with a specific credit card. I minus the credit card amount from my savings acount number and it shows more or less my taxable income. Easy acounting for the ADHD tree climber sole propieter.

That 10% goes to whatever investment you think worthy at the end of all your acounting. If you earn too much, it will Most likely go to the government so they can buy more killing tools.

This is why I try to earn as little as possible.

Re: Paid \"Under\" the table

thanks treebing, thats a nice little trick, consider it being put to use, and your right about me already owning my own business, i just want to be more of a full service tree company, right now all i can do is put it on the ground and call a buddy to come chip it, i hate it.

my boss is pretty much my best customer but lately ive been doing better on my own money wise, but honestly, i like the steady income working for someone else brings in, regardless if it is less than i feel i deserve. im going to ask him to put me on the books, if he says no than im just going to ask to be brought in as a sub contractor and ill pay out all the taxes, if i claim them any other way, my boss will get into trouble because im only supposed to be working 20 hours a week in the insurance mans eyes

viva la resistance brother

ps. are there any other tree companies out there in the south jersey area looking for a climber that pays on the books and is working all year round, if so please please give me a shout

In this day and age, cash is for pocket money. Yeah, I like cashies but black ink and a good looking balance sheet will win the day and open doors.

Re: Paid \"Under\" the table

As a Owner I would Like to see all the companies that pay under the table go out of bus. and as a climber that is at high risk why would you want to be in a tree with out workers comp. because if you think he will take care of you your just plain stupid.

Re: Paid \"Under\" the table

Just when I thought everyone knew what they were talking about , I got reminded . Stick to trees and forget about moneybuzz.

It is not possible for an employer to pay cash and still have workers comp??

Of course it is. Making payroll in cash is perfectly legitimate and does not preclude recording and declaring the ammounts....but it certainly is rare.

Re: Paid \"Under\" the table

I Am my own employee climbing without workmans comp. I will do my best to take care of me. But i guess I realized I am going to be climbing anyway regardless of whether anyone has got insurance on me. Its my decision ultimatly to put myself in that risky spot, its never been a bosses decision to put me anywhere. I am my own responsibility.

I think I found not declaring my cash was just too complicated. It means that you have to almost lead dual identities. This gets really confusing and it all gets muddled.

It is so important to know how much you have earned and how much your spending.
If you dont keep track someway of what youve earned and how you spent it, than you might have well not earned it.

does a tree make a sound when it hits the ground and no one is around?

If your going to keep track, than you have to declare it, otherwise you have to figure out a nifty dual accounting system which really is incredibly complicated and i think would be kind of creepy.
