Oregon Coast Big Trees

Woke up this morning and had a spontaneous urge to drive to the Oregon Coast. Started between Cannon Beach and Manzanita checking out a few medium size Western redcedar trees.

Not far away in Oswald West State Park, a fairly large Sitka Spruce. 209 feet tall. 40 foot circumference @ DBH.

Browsing the Oregon registry, it's really not that far from the present new Oregon Sitka champion.

Oregon Big Tree Registry

Just sent them an email, because I was under the impression that points is based on 1/4 crown spread for national champions, and the Oregon points for the Sitka seem to include the entire 93 for crown spread.

Before it fell, I used to stop at the Oregon Champion Sitka Spruce every year, at least once. Will probably stop every year anyway, to see just how nature works-over the remains. The shrubs are already beginning to engulf the fringes now.

Another view.

Washington's Sitka was a co-champion. And that one is still standing, and easy to walk to near Quinault.

The 70-300mm lens is starting to become a favorite for leaves and flowers.

Bigleaf maple leaves.
