Old Growth forest found in Virginia

Thanks! I was not sure how hard it was going to be to bring a camera there with the water and low light conditions. I will go back with a tripod next time and faster speed film. And a tree boat! :) I am not afraid of bats.

Treena, that's an awesome place!! Kudos for finding it so quickly! Do you have Google Earth? If you do, could you post the coordinates? I homed in on Courtland....and see some forested areas along the Nottoway...closeup views have poor resolution in that area unfortunately. I lived my first 10 years on a farm on a wide creek 1/2 mile from the Chesapeake, on the eastern shore Va.....and climbed anything and everything I could, starting prolly at age 3!

I found this pic of the tree on the Remarkable Trees of Va website:

That looks like the same tree for sure. She does not have a canopy to speak of like the one Mark is in. Here is the top. I have a DeLorme Map that has topo details so I went by that. Very low tech, I do not have GPS for my canoe or truck. The canoe was way too big for the trip, 17' tripping canoe, the water has been high from all the rain so it was not that hard to paddle around. The river was very nice, dark brown, like coffee so you could not see much in the water, smooth like glass, slow moving but there were plenty of fish jumping and otter, birds of all kinds, heard an owl and saw a huge turkey, turtles and lots of raccoon scat on the trees. Lot's of poison ivy, but no bug bites! The local duck hunters are very familiar with this swamp. I saw duck blinds along the way. The swamp was not deep so I am sure during dry spells it could be a nice hiking spot.

Approx.

Off Rout 58 in Courtland, VA

The canoe was wide and we did not have as shallow as a draft as a light kyak would have. I can carry up to 2000 lbs in my canoe I would not trade it in for anything it is a great boat. You can live in it! But for a 1 hour swamp tour it is kinda over kill. I would try to find a friend's smaller boat to borrow next time I go in.

Thanks Roger, I am taking a digital photo class starting next week, hopefully I will be able to fix things soon on my own! Right now my pictures come from 35mm film then I have a CD made at the drugstore. I broke down and bought a digital camera this week, should be here in a few days.

Schweet...what model did ya get? Go here for a good free photo organizer with some editing features. www.picasa.com.

I found the location on Google Earth...Old Bridge Road. It is awesome that trees that old and large have survived that close to town.

Here's a grand old big leaf maple that we're removing soon. Exposed roots from construction, the lot clearcut upwind of it, yet the neighbors were fighting to save it...to big of a liability to keep. It has two appx 3.5 foot trunks. Hopefully the trunk has some figured wood so the craftsman that is taking it will be even happier.

Nice Roger, I will try picasa. I ordered a Nikon D50.
Is that the Hood Cananl in the backgorund of the big leaf Maple? I lived in Poulsbo for three years before I move to VA I miss the moss and the good coffee but not the banana slugs.

Shouldn't need a class for that. I've provided plenty of
information right here on the Buzz and will gladly answer
any questions.

There usually is a directory full of snapshot-sized
versions on the CD. Those versions are what you want to
be uploading here.

And please don't upload an image and then source it into
the body of your post. Let us click the link when/if
we're ready to devote the time to fetch it; don't force us
into seeing it just because we loaded the thread to read
it. Not to mention it sometimes ruins the formatting of
the page, causing us to have to side-scroll back and forth
to read the text when the image is wider than our browser
window. Reading a web page that has to be scrolled back
and forth sideways for each line is almost as difficult to
do as following a series of email/newsgroup
correspondences where the people fully quote the previous
material and each add their own new content at the top
instead of the bottom!

The free software package at http://www.imagemagick.org/
doesn't devote a great deal to organizing images but
"contact print sheets" can be made with it which provide
"clickable" thumbnails to the images, and you'll find no
software which can as easily do nearly as much with an
image as can ImageMagick.

Hosting embedded photos most likely has chased more than a few people away from the Buzz.

Thanks Glen,
I have learned a lot from reading Tree Buzz and have always been impressed how you can help anyone with their technical issues. There are tons of great posts where you have corrected folk’s downloads so that it is smooth sailing for all. I feel like I am riding on the back of the bus when it comes to the language of computers. I don’t really have a firm grasp on what I am reading in your posts! You are one of my inspirations for taking the class. For me, sitting in a class one night a week for 3 hours, will help. I hope to have a better understanding of computer imaging and how to incorporate it better into my life. Thanks again, Treena

Thanks for the kind words, Treena. At least I attempt to help. I wasn't living in a vacuum so I can't say I taught myself but it's safe to say at least that I directed my own computer education. This kind of stuff has always come readily to me so forgive me when I don't understand the need for formal instruction. By all means, take and make the best of the classes if you at all feel the need.

The first thing that comes to mind when I hear "computer classes" is that Windows-specific stuff will be taught instead of how stuff can be generally expected to work and I really feel that's teaching a student how to tie their own hands to the desk, so to speak. I often liken Windows to a 1/2" diameter pencil and paper with lines an inch apart. Remember those? If you'd rather (at least be able to) use "college-ruled" paper and a fountain pen, go to http://www.ubuntu.com/ and either download the current CD-ROM image or give them your mailing address and they'll send you a minimum of 5 pressed discs at zero cost to you.

If you're going to learn something anyway, might as well be something good (and actually safe to stick on a public network) :)

Whatever path you choose to take, good luck!
