Old Growth Douglas Fir climb Portland Oregon

Nice time lapse on the descent! Couple tight spots

I dont have my wesspur w me, but I think it was called Aztec mechanical advantage rope pulling kit or some permutation of that. Give them a call, I bet they can figure it out. Only 20 bucks I think too.

Looking forward to more climbs!
Take care
Jon

I'm planning to go to Portland and do some Douglas Fir climbing. I know this is not much notice but if anyone is interested I would enjoy the company.

This weekend July 26th, 27th and or 28th.
This year I'm planing on being there around June 19 or so, looking forward to seeing the place again.
Come join me, I may be camping there some and also staying in a nearby motel.

Wow. I'm really impressed with these climbs - beyond epic! I've just gotten into the business and will eventually work my way into recreational climbing when I'm not so busy apprenticing. Oroboros is doing an amazing job showing me the 'ropes' - he's one of the best self-taught arborists/tradesmen I've ever met, and we rock and roll 8-4 every day here in Regina, Saskatchewan, with his company Blake Tree Experts.

Currently working with a TreeMotion Lite harness, Lava rope (11.5mm), a Stihl 192TC, and still putting together my kit as work comes in. Just ordered a ZigZag, some Treehog spurs, and a rigging rope. I've got my first big removal in the Valley next week.

Can you guys recommend some education/tips/vids for learning about recreational climbing? What's this scene all about?

I'm not sure there are any specific to rec climbers. I along with others on here are rec climbers and we come here to learn and contribute any thoughts we have. All you guys and gals that work trees for a living, don't kill me for saying this....rec climbing is just arb work without the cutting tools. We usally go slower and enjoy the view longer because we are allowed to. We use most of the hardware that has been developed over the years by tree workers and how far you want to push it is really up to you. Once again, don't beat me to badly about the comment above. Just trying to show that the basics for climbing are the same.

He is in his laboratory Jon, you know how he gets when he down there, ha ha.
Jon, frank, you guys are too funny. Yes the trip got postponed as my daughter was have a baby and I needed to stay out of trouble with her. She just had the baby so now I'm free to roam. I'll let you know looking forward to climbing up there in the beautiful Northwest.

MonkeyL, you make some good points. I just want to add my thoughts as well. I get tired of labels, whether it be in politics religion or tree climbing. I understand there are climbers that do it is for fun once in a while, put their gear in a box and don't think about it or do it again for months. It is the same with guys that are working, even though they are climbing everyday, they may not be thinking about it any more than the so-called rec climber. To me, this is a think tank, where the ideas come from and what you do with them is irrelevant.
There are guys flying RC airplanes that can give me lessons in aerodynamics.

Portaledge. I see someone used one up in the Douglas Fir as shown in the Giant Douglas Fir vid. It's been a dream of mine for some time now to camp up high in an old growth Douggie. I just ordered a portaledge for that reason. I also figure it will be fun to use in other trees as a hang out ledge. Would it be possible to have some talk about ledging it in trees? Thanks, m.

This summer! Ledging for days! Let's get pizza ordered and sent up a rope.

Richard, any chance you will be in Portland this January? I'm going to be there the 15th through the 29th. I would love to do a rec climb.
Hey Landon, love to be but not going that time of the year. For sure this summer, there is the 2015 rendezvous end of August in Washington so I'll probably make a couple of visits to the NW this year.
