2004 NJAISA Annual Work Day

Saturday December 4th, 8 am – 3 pm

Branch Brook Park, Newark, NJ

Thanks to all the efforts of Paul Cowie, Harry P. banker, and the rest of the Work Day Committee, we have another great event scheduled to improve the health and safety of a great community tree resource at Branch Brook Park in Newark, NJ. Your prompt reply is needed as we are committed to providing a full day of tree work for this nationally known Essex County Park.

We will be gathering at the entrance to the park off Clifton Avenue in Newark. The easiest way to enter the park is taking Route 280 to Exit 13, Clifton Avenue. Rt. 280 can be accessed from the east via the NJ Turnpike, Exit 15W, or from the west via Rt. 80. The entrance to the park is near Sacred Heart Cathedral, and will be plainly marked with signs. You will be assigned tree work according to our needs and your abilities and equipment. Section leaders are assigned to control work areas within the park, and all questions on necessary tree work must be directed to them. Once assigned to an area, make sure you know who your section leader is. Tree work will be elevation pruning, hazard pruning, invasive species removals, and dead tree removals. All removals will be marked by the section leaders, and only marked trees will be taken down. Debris storage sites will be located in the park – again check with your section leader as to these locations.

We will be working in the gazebo area in the morning, followed by the roadway to the Cerone ball fields, and lastly behind the visitors center at the north end of the park. There are many low bridges in the park, but there are ramps to avoid them. For safety and ease in traveling around the park grounds, NO AERIAL LIFTS WILL BE ALLOWED ON THE CENTRAL ROADS OF THE PARK! We need 2 cranes and some log trucks, but mostly aerial lifts for utility line clearance, buckets and climbers for near- and off-road tree pruning. Coffee, lunch, and restrooms will be provided. A group picture will be taken after lunch before resuming or reassigning crews, as we have done every year!

Please fill out the volunteer from below as completely as possible, and return it to NJAISA by fax (732-574-9111) or email (trees4nj@aol.com). In case of inclement weather, call 732-574-9100 to listen for a postponement announcement. For other information or details during Workday, call 908-472-7855. Other information will be available during the week by calling Harry Banker at 973-887-7064 or online at www.njarboristsisa.com. We look forward to your participation!

I am looking forward to seeing everyone on Saturday. NJ and Pennsy guys! As you may have read, I am having a party after. All are invited. See me Sat. for directions.

Here's a shot of some pruning. The tree on the left has smokey (left w/ red helmet) and Rory in it. The tree to the right has Teti in the lower left, me in top center and Sawdust in top right. And that's Ted working the ground.

I wish people would be more considerate of people like myself who are on high speed and running a resolution of 1400 x 1050. If people would post larger pictures I would not have to waste time zooming in.

Here's a pic of loading logs in a crack vial filled area. Hopefully that problem will be curbed with all the invasive removals we did. This was load number two @ 4pm. 60 yds total.

If you were to film a show, "American Treeguy" and we had deadlines to meet, this would have been it. The guys worked non-stop, wide open all day. We did it, and there was this old-school treeguy, who just had a triple by-pass, who worked circles around most.....myself included. /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Not only is there big trees in Jersey they got some equipment too . I think all the money might be in Jersey , not in Newark though.

That is a picture of our new Sterling log truck. Its got the 450hp Benz motor in it and it rips. Full load of wet Willow (30yds) in it the other day and the operator said it would still pull up hills where you would normally have to downshift. Not only does it look good, but its got snot.

We bought it as a rolling chassis, built the bunks and mounted the prentice ourselves. Our in-house mechanics are priceless. /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif
