Nick\'s Throwline -- JUICED

Serveral months ago, Nick did a little video on the use of a vintage fishing reel to handle throw line in the tree. This video runs with his idea and adds a "rope shackle" ... so us old farts don't have to handle stuff we can't see!

Nick's Throwline with Rope Shackle

<<oops, sorry. wrong URL -- fixed OK now>>

Thanks for the vid, Nick.

Re: Nick\'s Throwline -- JUICED

Nice job as always, Tom.

This begs the question... has anyone tried using a modern Pfleuger reel for this application? They are sold for about $40 at bass pro and similar places...

Re: Nick\'s Throwline -- JUICED

Nice contribution, Tom. I'll keep that in the memory bank. I haven't yet needed to carry a line in a tree, but it may come in right handy someday, maybe even for a compact retrieval method for an isolated SRT line. I'm wondering if you're using that for an initial toss...does the line pay out nicely? Do you secure it somewhere for that?

Negatory, to make a throw you pull out enough line to reach the target and back again and let it hang below your position in the tree. The usefulness of the automatic reel is organized line storage and it's quick to pick up line.

Climbers are usually getting them on ebay for 10-15 bucks so folks are less likely to spring for a new $40. auto fly reel. A new Pflueger auto reel should work fine though, the basic functionality is the same as the old ones. The Pflueger model #1195 that I just looked on their website weighs 9oz which is less than the more heavy duty 1950's reel I picked up on ebay.

That's pretty much what I figured. It's still something I'm considering acquiring...just for fun!

Re: Nick\'s Throwline -- JUICED

Bugg... tell me you didnt pay 25 dollars on a leash just for the carabiner? you dont even have a dog!

Re: Nick\'s Throwline -- JUICED

I totally did (I got mine for $20). but I made the leash in to a foot loop and used the mini corner trap for a rope wrench upper chest harness. but yea, I'm a sucker for little carabiner.

how much line can you put on one of those reels? 100' would be nice...

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't think you can fit 100' of say 1.7mm ZingIt, I think I topped out at 80' last time I tried, been awhile though, Nick? How much do you fit on your reel?

Re: Nick\'s Throwline -- JUICED

hey Dan,

My reel took 46' of 1.4mm Flingit. Brought it all back in without doing more winding of the spring.

You should be thinking only for in-the-tree tosses. It's not for long ground shots.

See AJ's post: he's got it exactly right.

Re: Nick\'s Throwline -- JUICED

Ah! Smart.

40' isn't much for that is it, and that's with the new skinniest FlingIt.

Worse, these new throwlines are very unforgiving. I'm ready to shoot myself before I get a problem fixed. I like it for this reel, but in a cube or for a ground handling task, I'd rather something bigger.

I was actually thinking of a ground access line from the bucket, with the additional possibility of setting a lowering line from the bucket.. Thanks

Daniel I carry 150' of Zingit in a small bag on my harness, I put the line into it in mini flaked bundles, say a dozen stacked 12" loops in the palm of my hand then stuff into the bag, then repeat, takes up 150' pretty fast. When I'm deploying the throwline any tangles are confined to one "bundle", always falls part easily, don't have issues with tangling, at least from what's in the bag ;-)

Re: Nick\'s Throwline -- JUICED

OK so I picked up the modern version (Pflueger 1195) for $25 .... currently made in China.

..... its capacity is about the same as Tom's (40' of the 1.4mm) which didn't impress the guys around the shop very much. Just a little more capacity (80') would make a big functional difference. Pretty lightweight though.

This version is a little smaller and taller than the old school version. Will test it out and see how it does...

Re: Nick\'s Throwline -- JUICED

There are many kite strings made from Spectra that could be wound on those Plueger spools that would miles more length.
