New to splicing!

Beer!!! Hell You offer enough of that I'll be out! Throw in free food and I might not leave.

If your really interested in a splicing class get in touch we can start to hammer something out.

I think a class would be great! I'm pretty sure I know where we could host or sponser such an event. If this gets going let me know and I can start doing a little leg work for it.

Matt, sounds good, we just have to find a time that works.

I tried to get a TC Splicing Workshop going last year with Nick Araya and Brion Toss. Had the MPRB with us for a great site on Lake Harriet. Thought I could draw in some sailors as well for a two day course. MSA on board...but then it proved difficult on scheduling as every one is pretty busy near the end of summer...and the park board put the site under construction to rebuild the tennis courts or playground or something...but I could give it another go if there's interest...
I need some more hands on instruction too.

So for someone looking to get into splicing what would you guys recommend for tools? Just buy one of the ABR splicing kits off treestuff? Any tips for testing some initial splices (I was thinking I might set up a little drop test for my first few efforts to gain some faith in my splices)

Get a simple fid kit, nice scissors, sharpie marker, a wire fid, and some good needles and you should be all set to make the basic splices.

Knot and rope does break testing at 15 dollars a break. They give you a nice graph of your splices so you can take a deeper look at what happens to the splice. Imo its worth the money to know exactly what they broke at.

Bump. So, @wyoclimber, how did this stuff end up working out? Do you still splice rope?

I still have yet to try it, but I've got some AmSteel I'd like to start with, because the videos make it look pretty easy. I still need to buy a minimum set of splicing tools, though.

Thanks for any input you might have to share.

Well, here is my creation! Thanks for the info and ideas, it made it much easier. I went with 10mm OP for the main section and 8mm OP for the pulley hitch. Both of them spliced much easier than the other ropes I have worked with. After stitching them I used some shrink tape to seal/protect the stiches. Overall, this turned out way better than I thought!! 317782-PulleySplice.JPG

I just wanted to say, this was some gorgeous looking work.

@SomethingWitty; Yeah, I guess that's what happens when you do a forum search on a topic of interest. You end up digging up old threads that were forgotten. The archives are a treasure trove. So many great posts just waiting to be found again.

The reason I know that the members are still active is that I tend to want to reward good posts that folks make with a "Like", as it can draw people back into a conversation they'd sometimes forgotten about. It feels rather pointless sometimes to "Like" a post if the member in question has not been around in ten years. So I take the time when I'm in a thread that is really old to see if the guys who made the posts are still around to be drawn back in, or if they've flown the coop. I also like to "follow" people who've made some great posts, just because the chances seem good that they will have something to teach me in the future, if I'm lucky. It is just one more avenue to find information to feed a hungry brain. A little strange, I guess.

I'm still around. Been years since I've spliced something. I did a ton of work that i don't use. I almost went into splicing for money but never got that idea off the ground. My kids have a 3/4 double braid sling for a port a wrap as a climbing rope for their wall. I love bragging that that rope would lift your car to our friends that come over for birthday parties.

I'm proud that I have a huge thread that will live on for a long time. I can still help with questions but I have to dig my notes out. I'm not too far gone That i would sell my tools. I get to climb once a month if that and I am stuck doing manager junk than doing what I really like.

I check in every now and then but its more for job posting and PHC stuff. I still love to climb i just can't make time for it with work and family life. ids are almost old enough to climb with me now.

@Jman; Thanks a lot for checking back in with us. It is interesting to see how things developed for you. Maybe now that the kids are getting old enough to climb, you will have a good excuse to get back into climbing on a more frequent basis. I know your kids would love the experience of getting to climb trees with their father. It would be a bonding experience that they would never forget, in my opinion. They would be some really lucky children.

It is nice to know you have not sold off your splicing tools after all of this time, in spite of not having used them in a long while. That tells me you see value in the activity. It makes me want to come up with a hard list of tools I need and then to just go ahead and buy them. I think there's a thread on this forum in which some of the veteran splicers gave their suggestions for such a short list. I need to go back and find it.

Thanks again for jumping back into this thread. I wish you well, and hope you have some happy days of climbing in your future.

Tim

Check this post. My kit is pictured above. I've never really needed more than what I show. Biggest investment is the scissors that can cut the high mod fibers. I spent $80 on mine.
