New Tie-in Technique. The bed sheet!

I bid a job yesterday where I saw the neighbors' 60' western red cedar had an 80% canopy raise.

My customer told me that the guy took a bed sheet, tied it into a loop around the trunk and himself, forming both the lanyard and belt, then climbed branch to branch with his electric chainsaw, removing all the branches. I think he just left stubs to stand on, and provide a bit of fall arrest for his "lanyard", removing them on the way down.

Actually, viewing from the road to the back corner of the house where the tree stands, it looks like he did good branch collar cuts. The smaller diameter outside the branch collar, and his small chainsaw made a natural match. I don't know if it was by design or not that he was performing BC cuts, without flushing it.

Crazy world. He is foreign-born Asian. Middle class, nice house in a nice neighborhood. My customer just said that he won't part with any money when he can do the job himself. Keeps it all in the family.

A National Park Service project partner from the past work in Death Valley with the conservation corps told our crew that he'd been in the Peace Corps in Nepal. He said that after living in a third world country, your perception of dangerous is changed.

Kinda blew me away. A bed sheet.

I wonder if the thread count makes a difference in tensile strength.

I have traveled quite a bit in third world countries and concur it changes your perception, period. As people living in developed countries we spend a lot of time developing creature comforts. If you step outside into a world living closer to nature therefore experiencing a more real lifestyle you realize how much we take for granted.

Sheets tied corner to corner have met standards for prison escapes since prisoners got sheets.

Exactly what I was thinking...so many materials are stronger than what we think.
