New Petzl helmet. FAIL!

I wouldn't go rushing off into the new Petzl helmets just yet kids.

After just a few short month (we bought the helmet at tcia) the foam had COMPLETLY BLOWN OUT!

It broke in a few spots then the ENTIRE foam center fell out, nothing was holding it in and the foam is ridiculously brittle. Can't blame this on sweat, it's cold out here in jersey.

Photos to come shortly (if I ever get to a real computer)

If someone doesn't mind doing the dirty work I'll text you the photos and you can upload them. I'm looking at you Cary because if your love for Petzl helmets.

Just uploaded pictures on my Facebook. If you're my friend feel free to check em out

If you're not my friend feel free to submit your application and we will give you a response within 6-8 weeks (only one applicant per household per year)

Yuck, that's why I'll stick to suspension type.

When's the new vertex come out? I'm interested in the two side adjustments like the Ecrin

this helps alot. on a previous thread i asked if the ecrin rock or vertex is better and some people told me o wait for the new petzl helmet. i think im gonna buy the ecrin roc. when we used to skateboard as kids we hated cheap skate helmets and thats exactly what those images look like to me. cheap skateboarding helmets.

yeah, other than sitting a wee bit lower on your head and few ounces, if that , in weight, what advantages does the foam have?

Cons:

1) It would be hotter in the summer

2) It would give less protection than a suspension system, IE: the foam is sitting on your bean ;)

3) The crap rots :)

Pros:

1) Mark C. wear them

2) they look a bit more punk.

hmmmm? gonna stick to webbing thanks, cuz I'm pretty much cool as I can be

Just got off the phone with Petzl America about this situation. The person I talked to was pretty surprised that the helmet was even being used, let a lone breaking already. They are having me ship the helmet out so that they can take a look at what's going on.

Apparently the ones that were for sale at TCIA weren't the final product? And these helmets have been tested and nothing like this has occurred with their test helmets.

I'm being credited until the new vertex vent comes out and then we are switching over to suspension style helmets when they are released in march.

I've informed Petzl that we are currently talking about this issue here on Treebuzz and asked for any additional information they could give to possibly appease the potential masses so everyone wave and say hi to the Petzl PR folks lurking on this thread.

Maybe I shouldn't have sold off my pacific helmet. Dammit.

That is not a good thing. Foam is looking like not a good idea.

Foam has been used in various helmets for years. This looks like an issue of using the wrong foam for helmet applications.

True Tom,
I have had an Petzl Elios for years rock climbing and no issues with it. The foam is different though. Maybe they should look at the foam in their older helmets.

Wow! Just goes to show you that the latest, is NOT always necessarily the greatest.
It's terrible that the foam fell apart like that. But on the plus side, at least you didn't discover the design flaw after being struck on the helmet with something. It's always scary when one has issues with PPE.
I too have always been a fan of the Vertex. I love the way it fits my head, it's relatively cool with the vents open, and I am definitely prefer suspension systems over foam.
