New Legislation for Tree Climbers in Ontario

At TCI I spoke with Ian Bruce who is on the committee for this. He said he has been fighting it so hard that he is now being ignored. The chair of the committe is trying to make our safety practices for working at height the same as that of Iron Workers and window washers. That way all across Ontario, if you are off the ground, you all follow one set of rules. Ian said he tried to get people out to watch tree climbers in action to show that it would not work but he got shot down. I don't know if Ian lurks on this board at all but if he does it would sure be nice to hear from him.

Footlocker,

You wrote:

Who has been trained to adequately rescue a climber using this new system (a system that has only been tested for a few hours, a system that has been condemned by the expert few that had a say)?

Is this "system" that you're talking about a rescue system or the redommended climbing system?

Can you elaborate on what you learned in the AR class?

What a relief, Ian was a mentor of mine when I was in Humber's Apprenticeship Program. I still enjoy chatting with him every opportunity I get. I wasn't aware that he was involved. He is a true 'pioneer' of arboriculture in Ontario having been in the industry since the era of climbing with a Bowline on a Bight. He may not understand alot of the most recent climbing techniques, (businessmen have many time constraints) but his progression with arboriculture alone provides him with an understanding of growth inhibiting issues.

I've neglected to keep everyone abreast of our situation here. Last word as of November 16 is that the MOL is backing off from rapidly pushing through new standards. For now work as usuall, however over the next year or so the commitee and sub commitee will be addressing the issues at hand in an attempt to develop a solution for 2005. This is 3rd person of course and all individuals who can verify and/or correct should do so......Dave?
