New grinder

Thanks for that lumberjack, yeah the price James gave me was less than that delivered to Canada, my one concern is on their video the 800 was vibrating a little more then my liking grinding the stumps. I saw that terex but not sure about buying something new on the market but that's a good price for a 38hp machine. Too bad about the avants flow! Oh well I still really like them!!

Thanks for that info Jeff I think you've scared me away from that machine !!!

I don't want to completely scare you off of it. Mostly, but not completely! You really should demo them if at all possible, so you can see how they actually run. I just wanted to put a bunch of important points in your head to be aware of. Happy Hunting!

The Stumper grinder is pretty tits. People with Boxer 532s report making $100+/hr consistently. Not bad for a ~$30k investment that also moves brush/trees (532DX, BMG, 220 Low Flow).

I run a Carlton 7015trx for most of my stumps.

The Terex grinders are built by Laski, not a new product.

Ok thanks I'll brush up on my Czech reading skills and browse their site! The guy at the trade show said there should be some Avant dealers in place shortly here in Ontario

You will be happy with the bandit 2550, we have a 2450 which is the older version of the 2550 (none hydro cutter and the motor is mounted on the cutter head) and we love ours. It is a very productive machine. I wouldn't even look into the toro as I had a guy out here that grinds stumps with one, when he came out and watched ours work he was hooked on bandit, he bought a 2450 and says that compared to his toro he's doing 3-4 stump compared to the toros 1. We run all bandit grinders and love all of them (2150,2450,2900t). We have had no issues with any of our machines. Just my thoughts, you get whatever works best for you.

Cheers

Thanks I'm really leaning towards the 2550 now, do you have the 44 Kubota or the 38 gasser? Just seeing if the price for the extra 4 hp is really worth it.

Deevo, it's not the 4 horsepower that makes the difference, it's the torque. When grinding a stump (or putting any engine under a heavy load) and the engine rpms slow down, it's the amount of torque that determines whether the engine "shoulders" the load and just keeps grinding, or whether it bogs down and you have to back off so you don't stall it. I checked quickly, and the Bandit 2550 is available with 4 different engines. I'm not positive about which specific engine models Bandit is using, but these numbers are at least pretty close:
Gas Briggs 35 horsepower 51 lb-ft torque
Gas Kohler 38 horsepower 60 lb-ft torque
Diesel Kubota 35.1 horsepower 91 lb-ft torque
Diesel Kubota 44.2 horsepower 118 lb-ft torque

Note the huge difference in the torque ratings between the gas and the diesel. That is the primary reason people are willing to shell out more money for a higher priced diesel engine. Not the longevity or fuel efficiency, although those are added bonuses. If you really want production, and I figure you wouldn't be looking at $38,000 stump grinders if you didn't, you'll pay the extra for the diesel engine option.

Again, see if the dealer will let you demo 1 of each. See how they work for you.

OK, I'm not trying to start a saw-brand war here, and I have no numbers to back this up, just a seat of the pants feel. But I think a great example of torque is the difference between Husky and Stihl. Take one saw of each that are pretty close in size and power (say Husky 395 vs. Stihl 660). Ever notice how the Husky cuts great when it's screaming wide open, but if you bury it in the log and the chain slows down a bit, it'll really die off? Whereas if you bury the Stihl and it slows down, it'll just keeping chewing it's way thru the log? That difference is torque. Make sense?

I had a 26 prior to the 38 and it was great until you got into 30" on up. Sometimes you have to do a giant one with gate access...the 38 is up to it, 26...get a motel room nearby. Both of these can be easily boomed into a yard with your crano.

First day we had the 26 back in 2011
I rented the 26 and was disappointed at only the power. The 38 must be the ticket! We spent all day grinding stumps. Did remind me why I never want to buy a stump grinder. Too many guys around here with just stump grinders doing it for fun... Anyways, This machine really shined when we had to navigate tricky back yards or travel distance to get to the stumps and when there were several stumps in a yard to do.

Nice set up but isn't the grinder attachment like $15,000.? And you have to tie up your mini when it might be needed. But a nice looking unit nonetheless. Norgaard did good on that one. Pretty sure it is diesel?

Wow yeah that's quite the difference in torque for sure and all good points ! I'm meeting the bandit guy this week on pricing. Thanks for all that info Jeff!

Who are you meeting ? Chris is a good guy to deal with if you are going to shanty bay stands behind stuff he sells and really pushes service dept if they get stale, mangoes bought a2550 last season call Kevin and talk to him. I think bandit only has one in missasuagato demo but if there's one to find Chris will get it . I mentioned to him I wanted to try a 2650 and he brought one from Michigan lol
