i have been buying alot of gear lately and i really appreciate everyone one's opinions here. it has helped me alot.

ok so down to business. what is your thoughts about new englands "fly". i was looking at getting 150' of it for use with footlocking and Ddrt. likes? dislikes?

Re: new england \"fly\" thoughts??

It was a great rope. There are much better ropes out there now. Blaze, Velocity and Tachyon come to mind.

The fly splice is super ugly, too.

Re: new england \"fly\" thoughts??

Velocity is a sweet rope, great for foot locking. super light, but a little too small in the hand. not sure what shipping to HI would be like but check prices at Wesspur and tree stuff.

Re: new england \"fly\" thoughts??

ya know i really wanna give that rope a try. i hear nothing but AMAZING things about it. i really wanna support john at knot and rope. he was soo nice when we talked about climbing here. i feel bad we never got to go. the least i can do is buy a new rope from him!

Re: new england \"fly\" thoughts??

Fly is a great rope, one of the best produced in my opinion.

Tachyon...in a word :)

Tom - I've been looking for the ideal rope for long pitch climbs. 11.5 is the max. spec. for my ascender so, Fly, Tachyon, Velocity and HTP are on the short list. I guess I'll need to look at Rocket Line now, too.

Anyway, few subjective Tachyon questions please:
How is it for long (150'+) climbs, SRT of course?
Bounce?
Milking?
Wear?

Thanks, Jack

I'd go with the 10mm HTP if you're climbing that height regularly.

Tachyon is fine for SRT ascent, it's bouncy but that's expected. Higher you get less bounce of course :-)

My Tachyon milked about 1/2 inch, barely measurable.

Re: new england \"fly\" thoughts??

Josh - FWIW, velocity is slicker than snot on a doorknob when it's wet. I find it tough to grip with atlas gloves on when it's raining...

Re: new england \"fly\" thoughts??

I'm glad someone brought the Fly up. You don't hear much about it any more.

I would agree with Nick and others. The Fly's day may have passed. It is very affordable which is a big plus, but I think the splicing difficulty sets it back... in an age where lots of guys want to do their own or at least not have to pay extra for a bulky splice.

Tachyon is pretty dominant these days. Blue Moon/PI still very popular.

Re: new england \"fly\" thoughts??

Other than the splice on fly being a pain in the arse... It's a great rope. It's got a nice soft feel and good knotability. Haven't had a whole lot of milking with it. The Rocket line is a great line as well.

Re: new england \"fly\" thoughts??

I've been climbing on Tachyon for the last two years and just switched to Blue Moon. I won't be going back to Tachyon. Too bouncy(elongation)!
