Does anyone know if New England ropes make a Eye&eye prusik cord? Just curious because i really love their ropes and was interested if they have a prusik as well. Thanks a lot

What type of splice is the HRC nick?

I had Rich H eye-splice me up some HRC and they've been working wonderfully. I also had him make two that were 2" longer and shorter than what I figured would be good use length. These have been handy for trying other knot configs.

There's a time to knot the HRC to the biner to figure out that optimal config, and then there's a time (like now would be good) to just have some eye-eyes made up.

i climbed on hrc for a year or so (until i tried bailout - which rocks even more). i did a double locking brummel on the core and buried 4 inches or so, then pulled the cover snug up to the throat of the splice and whipped/stitched it in place. holds up really well, especially if you dip the (naked core) eye in that "dip it" stuff. keeps the eye open and keeps threads from picking as fast.

NER makes HRC and sells it in prusik form tied and spliced.
Bishop is the only dealer stocking the splice version right now but all NER dealers can get them. It's 33 in with a brummel (exposed core eyes) on each end - finished with shink tube and splice.

Not true! I can think of 2 TreeBuzzers that can get them for you!

For the splice, it should be done just as Kathy described. I don't like the heat-shrink tubing and I DO love dipping, or double dipping the eyes to coat the exposed core.

What is the "dip it" stuff. Is this like the coating on double braids or is it thicker?

the "whip it, dip it" stuff is way thicker - kind of like rubber cement actually. i think it's just tool dip marketed to rope folks. marine supply places that sell rope will have it.

whip it is really thick, i double dipped some beeline and the eye is practically solid. i'm assuming its also very well protected but its far from supple.

hi jamie,
i usually paint it on rather than dip it - easier to control the thickness. while it's still wet, i put a sharpie marker that's also painted w/the stuff in the eye and pull it in and out until it coats the inside surface of the eye. this sets the shape of the eye, which doesn't need to be flexible right? then wait 1/2 hr and repeat. works for me..

Thanks for posting the pics Kathy H. I have been having problems on the final whip stitching part, the cover gets so frayed that it's hard to 'bring together' at the end and stitch on without fraying strands loose everywhere. Any tricks for that step? I thought about burning the ends but it's too close to the core to get a flame, at least comfortably for me.

I think West marine carries the dip it stuff...

you know, i guess what i do is leave enough cover to push up well over the eye and tape it so it doesn't get way fuzzy. then i do the whipping and when the whipping is finished (or when stray strands of cover keep getting sucked into the whipping and piss me off..) i cut the cover down just to the whipping. i don't want a match that close to the whipping, which will melt too.

hope that helps!

It turned out pretty good! Used the 'dip it' stuff to finish the eyes, which are pretty stiff but still good. Thanks again.
