New DMM 'Director' Carabiners

A similar product that just came out this summer is the rock exotica 1.1 omniblock w swivabiner. I’ve been climbing with one recently connecting the pulley to a rope bridge and the biner to my rope runner. A pulley to save wear on your bridge and a swivel in a very compact package, the most compact setup I can imagine (aside from swapping runner with akimbo, which I just might). Wondering if anyone is playing with this in a similar way? Or has safety concerns?

I'm using a CMI double tie-in micro. I think it works great. It allows the rope bridge to spool thru the pulley freely but I don't have issues w/that. Been using this setup with my rope bridge for over a year, since I got the harness.

Different strokes for different folks. If it works for you and your style keep doing it.

My bridge is one place I've never desired LESS friction. I tried a pulley on there once, but found it was too easy to flop side to side and that's not what I want. A ring, or swivel, or carabiner clipped on works for me. And wear on a bridge is not a concern. We're talking a 3ft chunk of rope that takes less than a minute to swap out. I have enough oddball pieces of rope kicking around that I can change my bridge multiple times a year.

That was my take on it at first too, but I gave it a little more time. I’m happy with it now, I love the Rook/ Hydra on my bridge. My only complaint is I can’t use snaps with it, which really isn’t a big deal anymore.

Why can’t you use snaps with it? Holes are small?

Yes, they’re tight holes with rubber grommets in them. I do like CT and ISC aluminum snaps on my lanyards and I got a 30’ lanyard with a DMM Sidewinder biner that also doesn’t fit in the holes. Long lanyards are growing on me to function as another climbing system sometimes. So I’ll clip the snaps or bigger biners right to the bridge if I need to. It’s not an every day thing.

I enjoyed a 25’ lanyard for a few years but recently switched back to something like a 12’ and haven't missed the long. Been playing with the tail of climb rope more when in such situations.

I said goodbye to snaps several years ago on the lanyard. I’d say an average of ten times a week I’m grateful I can take my carabiner out of the eye and avoid whipping my face / getting caught in a union as I travel back. Makes finding a new lanyard easier too. I do miss that easy action of the snap but a carabiner is still one hand accessible.

I'm using the RE swivabiner/akimbo combo for about 2 months now. It is nice, mostly. My concerns, and I welcome correction/input:

1. Sometimes the sharp angled junction of the spine and top of the d on the swivabiner does not play nice with the Akimbo. There will be a jarring snap that feels unsettling as the akimbo comes off the corner upon being loaded. I think a rubber grommet placed to function like a dmm rhino horn might be a good solution. The dmm version of the swivabiner seems to have a horn and I would like to hear about how it works with the akimbo.

2. Along the same lines, the top of the swivabiner is not flat - it is slightly angled. The Akimbo plays nice with flat.

3. I think the gate opens by pressing down instead of up, so a downward-oriented force (rope, branch, hand, etc.) could theoretically have a better chance of opening the gate. I think I prefer the gates that need to be pressed up to unlock...

4. Ideally, the swivabiner would have a bend radius mitigation such as a rook pulley or notch radius ring. This is a smaller issue...

I plan to keep using it for now.

I was worried about the biner shape with the rope runner but it works very well with it. Will have to grab a buds akimbo with it to look for what you describe.
