New device from buckingham

Thanks for posting your response. Perhaps our weight difference is a key factor in that Akimbo runs well for me across several ropes I use at different times. Tachyon, Safety Blue, KMIII Max, and I usually don't change adjustments. But I'm 220 and climb gear heavy most of the time with 40 lbs to 60 lbs of gear depending on what I'm doing.

I got creep and inconsistency with 3 other ropes before trying the xstatic. Surprised with your results, I kinda thought it would be worse with more weight. Blue moon was pretty bad as it kept flattening until I had the adjustments maxed and still got creep lol. I love it with my combo though.

wow, what type of work are you doing? i remember you saying that you do a lot of end weight reduction? 40-60 lbs gear sounds like a lot!
 
Maybe I lied. I weighed it out one time but it's been so long I forget. I work near the coast and do so much combination of end weight reduction and close up work that I usually climb with a top handle and extendable power polesaw at the same time. Plus options on my harness and rigging gear often.

I'll step onto a scale tomorrow.

I noticed in the video that's still live, the host highlights the long channels at the top end. Having a long channel through the cam of my own device turned out to be the biggest mistake I'd made through the whole process, and cost us nearly a year going in the wrong direction.

Have you seen the video review by Treestuff?
I am interested to see how well yours will work on an array of rooes, which it soumds like it will. That is my problem with some devices. I don't wanna have to fiddle with some adjustment every time I use a different rope, which is often as I use several different ropes regularly.

No I haven't, I'll watch it later. Do you know who worked on or thought up the device, or is it just an in-house Buckingham concept.

The settings give the designers a massive advantage in passing the various drop and pull tests. If the objective was to produce a device that was functional and user friendly in the field on but a handful of ropes, that would be one thing. But to meet the requirements of, say, EN12841, it's a whole new ball game, and very difficult to achieve both objectives in the one design. If a given device was solely an MRS unit, it would be half the work. I'd go so far as to say, easy. But that technique and limited function is much less desirable these days it seems.

I am eager to hear from someone who has used it on a pitchy rope, as that would be the make it or break it thing for me, and I know you are no stranger to pitchy trees.

No purely Mechanical device will be good with pitch, but some will be less handicapped than others. A hitch device will always adapt better. Pitch sticks to the metal surfaces and stays.

The one advantage the mechanicals have is the pitch can be washed out on site, for some temporary relief. And if the particularly device can be used in MRS, it will ride over the pitch a little easier as the components are producing less bite.

Those cleats or cams at the top of the Buckingham would be a disaster for Pitch. I can say with almost certainly. The rotating bollard at the bottom will help more than a fixed bollard. Grooves are also terrible with pitch and moisture, but useful for dry clean ropes less than 12mm diam, so should be kept short where possible. Like I said, it's a tough balancing act to achieve and tick all the legal boxes. Frightfully expensive too.
 
I Climbed with a tester at the MAC Comp setting up. He loved it. Didn't find the size an issue and said it was unmatched for ascent. I asked him how it differs from the Akimbo and pretty much said everybody asks that but it's nothing like the Akimbo. I didn't get to try it myself but he loved it.

Do you remember which rope he used?
 
Best results so far have been with Yale blaze and Teufelberger Fly according to a climber I work with. Buckingham has released a recommended rope list and appropriate setting on their website

Both of those lines bounced like a bungee cord for me when doing SRS (not using the device discussed here). Not my favorites for climbing.

Both the climber with the device and I are 220#+ with gear so believe that takes some of the noticeable bounce out, atleast for myself I find tachyon stiffer than drenaline and that’s not saying much. I will say I tried climbing with blue moon on the throttle and it wasn’t very smooth unless you adopted the “expert mode” style squeeze like the unicender it would pay out better but still clunkyish.
