New crane video

Me attached to the second hook (the ANSI approved system with shakel / fixed pin and cambium saver).
And the load hook beside me.

Nice Peder.

My only suggestion is that you keep your lifeline coiled and between your knees until positioned in the tree for your pick, then throw it down along the optimum lifeline feed route.

This method will save you a lot of unnecessary line pulling and conserve your strength for the day's work ahead of you.

Thanks for posting Peder.

hey jo, why you always suggesting holding the rope bag? why not just clip it to the saddle and let it hang.

why even throw it out the tree either?

Nice Fagus! I bet there is one of those on every block over there. That would be an exceptional Beech here and no one would ever let it be removed. It looked like you knew exactly what every pick was going to do....experience!

Very nice video!

why the double line on the crane (through the block)on such light picks instead of single line dead ended at the ball?...have you ever had issues with the lines crossing?

Two parting the load line means slower winching speed for sure. But perhaps they needed it for the heavier butt logs....or didn't want to take the time to change over the setup.

I don't see why tangling should be an issue.

Out west, I use logging chokers a lot, or wire rope slings for heavy picks. True, log chokers apparently aren't rated for craning. I really don't see why they shouldn't be safe and legal to use. I usually set two for added safety. Bothing is faster to set.... As well, they have been in use in cable logging for as long as high lead logging has been in existence.

Well OD, I like to do it that way so I can bail the hell downwards in a split second if the CO goofs, or whatever.

I don't like putting my well being in someone else's hands period. But when I do, I take precautions for every eventuality I possibly can, particularly with a CO I don't know bro.

Man, I hate to see picts of winter. Makes me worry bout how many nuts I got to store starting now to get it right.

Such a shame to lose a landmark beech like that. Did they kill it? They are one of the most susceptible to grade change and construction damage.

i'd say no more than the usual 2 nuts you have in your mouth the rest of the year.

if you rope bag the rope and clip it to your saddle so it hangs off the non saw side you can zip out the tree faster and even more safely than having your line thrown down the tree.....

the potential to have your line get wrapped up into a twig and bringing you to a halt as you bail out the tree is greater than the rope feeding out the bag and up into the knot....

never really had great luck keeping a "clean" line after throwing rope for the first pick or so.....

stay safe.

B I N G O .

The only thing with repelling with the rope in the bag is be sure to be using a long enough rope, because you might not see the end coming. Or put a knot in the end if you have reasons to be using a short rope.

I appreciate that what you're saying is true OD, but I'm old and somewhat set in my ways. I'm also a minimalist climber who doesn't like more stuff clipped to my saddle than absolutely necessary to get the job done. In fact every time I see climbers with everything including the kitchen sink clipped on their saddles all tangled up in a thick tree, I can't help but bust up laughing. but that's just me bro, an old school jerk!

As long as you can bail out in a split second OD, it's all good. more power to yu.

normally I clip.my ropebag to my harness. on the picture I didn't, because we were doing five trees on a row, so I didn't bother packing my rope before entering the next tree.
We didn't change the wire setup because the operator didn't felt.the need.for.it. The cable speed where way fast enough that day.
we have a lot of old beech trees around here. but I still love them. great beautiful trees. we felled the tree because it was attacked by a fungus. :-(
....but still I am sure we can't compete on big trees with the west coast of the US ! :-)

jomoco, you are right about the problem with keeping your line untangled from branches, when you throw it down. its often.quite tricky.
....sorry about all the "." my fingers are not pointy enough for my smartphone ;-)
