Oh yeah the ducks nuts on thin barked Eucs, only euc they don't like is Iron barks and messmates ( at least in my area)
ironbark is deeply furrowed and at points several inches thick

and the messmate is like climbing on soggy cardboard several inches thick

at least the messmate is soft whereas a slip on a iron bark usually results in the loss of a patch of skin several layers deep :mad:

please keep in mind there will be a blooper vid one day when I retire of all those whoopsies that hit the edit room floor
but it is as much a display of my workplace as it is a chance to pass on the knowledge something I was not able to tap into myself until I discovered tree work on youtube.
important part is you are both entertained and edumacated in some ratio so it is not all yawns and nods.
if you take the directions both August and Reg are following say a left and right angle from centre while I keep banging out mid range of centre then I feel a broad approach and range of skills/attitudes/interests is being covered.
would like for the Bix to come on back though :(

How did you do this Keeth? - I think I too have the same gaffs. From day one - I've never liked the shape of the gaffs.

I now think you may be able to buy different shaped gaffs: http://www.westechrigging.com/arborist---tree-gear-spurs-climb-right-aluminum-spurs.html - though I'm not sure, and I'd like to try reshaping them first.

A buddy of mine has the Buckingham sharpening kit and he let me borrow it to shape my gaffs. The kit comes with a template for the suggested shape. It takes about 1/16 of the face off (which is quite a bit), but they do feel better.

Thanks Keeth - I may try that. I've already been trying to take as much off off them using an old Klein Sharpening Kit (which seems really similar to the Buckingham Sharpening Kit) - though it takes a very long time (my arms get tired) - and I'm not sure I've managed to take all that much off by the time I just give up and stop (tough gaff metal).

Thanks Keeth - I might have to invest in one! ;)

With the Klein Sharpening Kit - I did try to make sense of the instructions and file guide - in the end I just gave up on them and furiously filed as much as I could from the curved underside (not that it made much difference); I then just gave up on that too. :whistle:

I am sooo confused! This is the replacement set I got from treestuff.com (labeled 12727-T) and they look nothing like the same model number that came on the wesspur sourced irons! Wtf?!?!

Mine are like the ones on the right... those replacements look like a much better shape... clearly, you're dissatisfied and should immediately ship them to me for evaluation!

So glad you posted this Worthaug - I did see Luke Dunlevy (or Tree Stuff) post a comment on facebook a few months ago saying that the gaffs have been redesigned - though I didn't find out any information about it. I have exactly the same gaffs as your old ones (on the right) - though I read the # as 12127-T (at least that's what mine say).

Really good to know now that if I get so frustrated with my current gaffs - I can at least fork out another $50 to get the replacement gaffs instead of have to buy a whole new set of spurs. Tree Stuff should really make the gaff redesign clearer to customers.

Are the new ones in the picture the 2-5/8" Tree Set or the 1-5/8" pole set?

love my aluminum climb rights guys ill be honest. im 5'10", 180lb without gear, and have average sized calves, and they've been an awesome purchase for the price tag. and spyder mfg will help out with any questions. if your around my size, i wouldnt pass them off as a bad set of climbers.

I have been following Climb Rights with interest for quite a while just because they seemed to adversely effect people I knew who post.

I think the 'blunt' spurs were the initial profile. 'Thinner profile' are more recent.

I think I heard of a set of narrow profile spurs coming from TreeStuff in the last couple of months. I"m sure they could tell you which they are.

(This is all my impression of things mind you.)

Treestuff definitely has them and I'm in love with my setup again. I added the Buckingham velcro lowers straps and couldn't be happier to strap them on, my spur confidence is back!
