New chainsaws

I'n in the market for a new mid range saw. I have saws that pooped the bed.

The saws which have been retired were a MS260PRO and a MS460 MAGNUM. I know Stihl has replaced the MS460 with the MS 441 C-M, I'm not sure about the MS 260 though.

Has anyone had experience with some of the new Stihl saws. Any help will be very much appreciated.

Mid-Range Stihl Chainsaws

I only use stihl professional chainsaws. For a saw just depends on what kind of work you want to do with the saw your looking for. Then think how big of bar your going to want to run and how much you looking to spend on a new saw.

My best saw is a stihl ms201T cut just about anything light. But its a top handle saw.Running a 16" E-light bar

Stihl ms260pro is nice and light 50.2cc 10.6lbs 16-20" bar

Stihl ms362 this saw replaced the old ms361 59.0cc. 13.0lbs 16-25"bar. This saw is sold in two types 1 lie the old saws or with a Second chain braking system know as Ms362 C-Q

Stihl ms441 Replaced ms440 70.7cc 14.8lbs 16-32" bar this saw has the C-Q braking system model too

The C-Q braking system also known as Quickstop is a lever on the handle like the trigger stop if you plan on running this type of saw wear heavy gloves if your work is going to be long.Every time I have use this type of saw end of the day you won't feel your hands..Good luck on pricking your new mid-range saw..Keep it safe!

Ms 260 PRO is an awesome mid-range saw. Then the Ms 460. 660 is the biggest saw I ever need and that is usuaLly for flushing out stumps. I think the Ms 260 is now the 261.

I stopped at my local Stihl dealer today while I was out and about to get a price on a couple new saws. I'm looking for a new MS201T-14" and a new MS261-20" (as noted above the MS260 has been replaced but apparently the 261 is very similar). Quoted prices were $540 and $568 respectively, plus tax. Is this reasonable or should I shop around?

My 362 is a perfect mid range saw. Light enough to climb with and powerful enough to handle almost anything on the ground.

I only have to clean the air filter out once or twice a month and the anti-vibration is amazing.

There the same saws just have new parts to meet EPA till 2014 If I recall right. For my ms201T I payed 560 plus tax but I went with the E-light 16" bar.It never hurts to shop around but sounds like a good price

I like my ms034 its a 1996 saw run a 20" bar I did some motor work to it.For no bigger then it is will keep up with my ms460 last spring stuck a bar that was for my 460 28" the 034 didn't have any problems cutting with a over sized bar.

Just cause its little does not mean it won't keep up

Mr S. google ms261 and have a good read about them before jumping in. I had a "heated" discussion with my stihl dealer last week on just this topic. The only thing a 260 and a 261 have in common is the color. The problems we have with the 261's cover everything from stalling to no power. His response was the new saws have a stratified engine, meaning completely different beast. They have to be not run wide open for 15 tanks of gas for a break in. If in the beak in period the saw happens to cold seize, then your S.O.L no warranty. Oh, and Btw let them idle for a minute or 2 before starting your job. 2 new 261's + 5 trips back to stihl in 6 weeks = a fleet full of huskys as rotation allows. To each his own, but I'd hate to see you get stuck with a saw your not happy with.
I just traded my 200 and 260 for a new Old stock 357xp

044. It may be old, but it is my go to midrange saw. I had my 200T and my 044 hanging from my side just a couple hours ago. There isn't much that beats raw power on demand. If your looking for new, I have to say my 441 has been very nice. A tad heavy for all day use in the tree but a decent saw in between.

Does the new stihl ms261 Have the new "intelligent engine management (IEM) System on it? This is a system that says it eliminates the need for manual corrections of the carburetor's high-speed screw.Sure this system will not do well carburetor hooked to the ignition module.

I'd go 261 auto tune. But I own old 026's because those new 'smart' saws are garbage... strato engine EPA conspiracy!

p.s. my favorite saw is MS440. Love a 200t too!

I don't know about the new saws, and it seems I don't want to find out. All I can say is I cut a lot of hardwoods down here and I have never needed more than a 260 or 460 in a tree. The 260 has a 20" bar most of the time ( I do have a 16" bar that have used in the past ) with RS chain ( yellow label ). This saw cuts like a demon and has good chain speed. The 460 comes out as I get into larger wood. I am the only person who uses these saws and I know this makes a difference. Too many cooks spoil the broth when it comes to saws as everyone handles them differently. I don't even let my groundies start or handle my saws. They got their own.

Oh yeah and saws are all about personal preference. Type of trees you are working on can play a big part as well as the majority of work the saws are being used for. Having well maintained saws with them tuned properly and using the right chain can make a lot of difference IMHO. My saws bark and that's no lie. I like good throttle response all through the power band. I can tell when I need to tweak my saws just by their sound when pelting chips in the kerf. Just my $.02.
