New Camera

I am in the market for a new digital camera and looking for your opinions. I havent used digital cameras to much, and have never owned one. I own a Cannon Rebel 35mm camera, and really like it. But it is large, and I mainly use it for artistic and hobby reasons. I am looking for a smaller camera to carry around with me.

By the number of pics posted on TB I am guessing many of you have digital cameras. Let me know what you like or dislike about your camera.

Thanks

I bought mine last year and thought it was great. Had a good zoom and a nice chunky feel to it like a mini SLR. It was good value too.

Now I know different and wish I had a different one. Zoom is not that important because you can crop on the computer. Some zoom for sure but its not that important.

Mine has a delay between pressing the button and taking the picture. Only about 1 second but really annoying. Try and find one with no delay.

Pixel size? Mines 4meg. You can get upto 5 easily now and more if you want to spend more. 4 seems like plenty though, I think my pictures come up ok on here and they have all been resized.

Most important I think is to get a small compact one you can fit in your pocket. The times I wanted to take mine to parties, weddings etc and it wont fit in my pocket and has to go in its bag over my shoulder. Really annoying. The fun of digital is that the photos are disposable if you want so its cool to take it anywhere and have fun with it. One that can be in your pocket all day without you knowing would be my best advice.

I agree with you that compact is the way to go. I have a large 35mm that is to bulky to carry everywhere with me. Thanks

I know there is more than 1 person here with a digital camera, does anyone else have any recomendations on what to get or not to get?

I don't have one yet either, but when I get one you can be sure it will have Zeiss glass. Sony currently has some little pocketables with the good lenses, as well do some other makers, I believe.

The first couple shown here (sony.com) have the good glass and are hardly bigger than a small stack of credit cards...

I have the first Sony in that lineup. All in all, it's working great for me. Very small, great lcd (important), Zeiss lens, and operates by simply sliding the cover open and shoot. The optical zoom isn't great for real distance, but not bad. A bunch of cool options on it like "speed burst" whichs takes 5 shots in about 1.5 secs. Great for catching the top of a tree going over.

I would shop around first, but if you want this one, it is now cheaper elsewhere. I believe that it is down to around $399 now.

i watch megapixel and optical zoom(can't be done on computer) to compare, not digital zoom (can be done on computer).

Depending on subject as closeups of knots, or trying to show man in tree 80' away; determines some of your needs.

The optical zoom can zoom man in closer, the more MP's the more you can further digitally zoom in on computer later, with less loss of detail/ color richness etc.

Higher MP pix take more room to store, on closeups with camera turned down to 2-3MP can get lots of shots before running out of space, compared to same at 4-5MP setting on same camera. BUt, on farther away shots, richer color, the extra digital info in the bigger, more detaield file/ thus filesize comes shining thru.

+-$200 can by a lot of camera anymore in 3-5MP range, some of the kid's 1MP cameras aren't tooooo bad for glove box.

Have you been here? http://www.dpreview.com/

Check the new all weather(proof) olympus http://www.dpreview.com/news/0505/05051201oly_mju800.asp

I own a Olympus C4040 zoom and I am especially happy with the aperture 1.8, that means I can take a picture of a treetrunk under a full leaved crown on a cloudy day without using a flash. At one time this year I was going to buy a Olympus C8080 wide zoom but the aperture starts at 2.4 what means less light in the lens and the 8 megapixel is not really a must.

Good luck with the search.
