New ART rope guide?

Also would this work well on spars?

Why not just make the black ring big enough that the pulley can pull through. Have a tight splice around a large "thimble" type ring that the concoon pulley can slip right through.

Because the big black ring would stick in forks and just about everywhere else too!

The best solution I have seen is to insert a wire into the large splice so that it holds open under no load, (for pinging the pulley through) but when it is pulled from the other end (ie when retrieving from the ground) it collapses and slithers through any fork. That way you dont need any big black ring.

Re: New ART rope guide?

Well I just completed my new home made rope guide and here it is. I just got back from climbing some big gnarly old growth's and I'm pleased to say that it didn't get stuck or malfunction once. We'll see how it fares over time. The one disadvantage compared to my old rope guide is that there is less weight to the loop end for whipping it around a stem. Other than that, I like it more than my original rope guide with a ring.

Nicely done, I like the "drop out" retrieval feature on the white thimble. Did you fabricate the thimble?

You could always clip a 10(or 8)oz throw bag on the sling eye for placing it around a stem.

Re: New ART rope guide?

Awesome!!! I'm just getting ready to make an new AFS (had to give up the tail for the old one, but now I have an 8ft Blue Streak like you used!) and I'm wondering where the Cocoon Pulley can be found, and the retrieval snap, and if I have to have a special tail to use with it for the Prussik knot.

Also, nothing against Sherrill or anything, but is there a place besides Sherrill I can buy the pulley. Sherrill has great service, but I prefer to try and support the smaller companies before the bigger companies. Thanks!!

EDIT: One more question, where can the Rope Guide Basic be purchased

Re: New ART rope guide?

Moss, Yeah I just used a friends lath to turn one out of nylon. That way I could make top of the cocoon mate up perfectly with the thimble making a smooth transition.

Ranger, The halyard shackle can be bought at any marine supply store. I bought the cocoon from Vermeer Canada. Might have been more expensive to go that route than from Sherrill in the US even including duties but oh well. I'm assuming you are reffering to the eye and eye I used for the prussik. I spliced up my own to suit my own specs but theoretically you could use what ever you want. To use the thimble however it pays to use cordage that is as small as you can find to pass through the thimble with zero friction. I used Samson Validator SKB 1/4" MBS 5400lbs and splice able. If you want the old rope guide you can also just buy the old style pulley and make your own.

Re: New ART rope guide?

Thanks Murph!! A big help!!

I've been working on a Ropeguide "clone" today, and have it just about complete, expect for the shackle and the retrieval tool. My biggest problem is finding something that will fit through the pulley, but not through the ring or shackle. We're going to the hardware store later this week, so hopefully I can find a ring just the right size instead of the shackle (I rigged mine with some old throwline, instead of tying the rope directly to the shackle on the end)

Can I ask though, what you use for retrieving your Ropeguide. Did you just buy the Ropeguide ball from Sherrill??

Re: New ART rope guide?

I (actually my old boss) found the same red retrieval balls at a fisheries supply store...same place I bought the halyard shackle from. 99cents I think (for the ball)

Re: New ART rope guide?

A little bit of electrical tape over the whipping on my spliced eye is the perfect size for me. I might make a retrieval ball out of plastic for use with other ropes. The big advantage of the splice is that I can't forget to put a retrieval device on, just unclip and pull it out.

Re: New ART rope guide?

Murph

Does that still work on a stem? Or can you only use it on a branch union. Great work! you obviously know what your doing!

I have been using the RG Primus for about 5 months now. I like it a lot. I too have had it get stuck a few times, but I did that with all of the RG's and other makes as well.

One thing I have done is to always snug it up pretty close to the crotch. This does not allow there to be too much space for movement when retrieving. This is where the eye splice could hop off of the thimble, and that makes it impossible to remove from the ground. Since I started doing this I have not had it get stuck once. Well, except for when I let it fall down into a tight union below.

Thanks for the report Mark, i've been very interested in this for some time. Did you try to use it on a stem? How does that work? It seems like it would make it harder to retrieve. Maybe wouldn't even work on smaller stems.

Yes, thanks Mark for the report. I'm a full time student and just recovered from a broken thumb so I haven't had any time to work with my primus facsimile. The prospect of the rope coming off the thimble does make me nervous. I will play with that next time I'm out which hopefully will be soon. The times that I have been out with it I've found it liberating not having to worry about the ring/carabiner getting stuck in my tie in crotch.

This is going way back, but i want to ask if anyone else got this? Is there someone to contact about the "thimble" if you would want to just purchase that. For those specially you murph how do you go about duplicating that "thimble"
