Why not just make the black ring big enough that the pulley can pull through. Have a tight splice around a large "thimble" type ring that the concoon pulley can slip right through.

Because the big black ring would stick in forks and just about everywhere else too!
The best solution I have seen is to insert a wire into the large splice so that it holds open under no load, (for pinging the pulley through) but when it is pulled from the other end (ie when retrieving from the ground) it collapses and slithers through any fork. That way you dont need any big black ring.
