NEED NEW ENGINE bandit AW65 chipper

The 38 hp units Bandit is putting on their chippers now are amazingly strong engines. I have used one on a new rental 65XP and a new 90XP rental machine.

I told the rental company I was chipping a lot of big limbs and wanted the 90XP with sharp knives, they said yes we'll put sharp knives on. I took the machine knowing that would probably not happen. Chipped for fifteen or twenty minutes with knives as dull as most professionals would take them off. It chipped okay - 7 and 8 inch twenty foot long pine limbs. Then I swapped the knives over to their new side. That thing chipped phenomenally for the rest of the day on similar material.

That was my last bit of checking/research to make sure I wanted the 90XP for a new chipper. I had it built with a 50 horse diesel thinking I would like the extra power even more, and I do.

When I got a stump grinder it was easy to go with that same 38 hp engine. And if my 65AW engine goes I will put that engine on as a replacement.

Thank you!!! Merle What engine is it? I mean make and model (I’ll try to look it up). And would it fit for sure on my 65aw? I guess it would assuming the the configuration is the same?

Not sure. I tried looking it up yesterday on the Bandit website but they didn't list engine specifics. I will check my stump grinder next time I go to that storage area.

I doubt it will bolt up. Some minor mods required. Last time I checked it would take $5 or 6 thousand to get another Wisconsin engine, about $2500 to get one of these. (Briggs or Kohler?)

Several different brand 6" chippers at local equipment rental place.
All have the 38hp Briggs.
My 6" Bandit has a 35hp Hatz diesel. Sourcing parts for it is a hassle, and they are spendy.

Honestly,

Guys I’m just a small fish tree guy! Lots of respect for so many of you! Great to have the input!

Anyway, I think I may just need to buy new 65xp or 75xp....up here in Ontario that’s about $30k. It’s a fair bit for a young family just trying to save for a house. Anyway, if anyone has advice on good dealers in Ontario (I know it’s regional). Or things to steer away from or helpful tips, let me know.

I’d be quicker to look into the clutch manufacturers. What clutch works for what engine, beyond that it’s simply motor mounts! A Toyota 22r could work on any chipper as long as a fly wheel and clutch combo fits. A few mods to the mounts is pretty much no biggie

Hi Evo,

I did some research and I know what you’re saying is very true (at least with my limited understanding). My chipper runs on pulleys (is that what you mean). If I understand properly, the reason is because I need to match shaft pulley RPM’s within spec for the cutter disc RPM or it won’t work well or worst fly apart?

Ken

@RopeShield may have a engine that was recently put new on a Bandit 65AW. Didn't I see somewhere that you bought a new chipper Thomas (RopeShield)?
I managed to replace the 25 hp with 4o hp Subaru. The Bandit is a full redo/winter project or mb sell as is.
Now have CR70 Wallenstein with kohler ch980.
This is the best chipper in its class imho and by best i mean easily 4x the chipper at an excellent price.
Wallenstien is a seriously productive chipper for its size. Coming from a tree co that does 50/50 prune to removal of mostly hardwoods(maple oak beech ash etc.
Anonymity and I spoke a lil about what to do.
For me when the time came for a new chipper or rebuild the choice was easy. The cost of new engine and rebuild compared to the cost of a new smarter and more productive chipper was pretty easy. I looked hard at other manufactures and the key factor in that decision was the fluid coupler, ease of maintenance and build quality. So far so good (y)

Ropeshield,

Very interesting points! I’m starting to lean towards new like you did. I wonder what a cr70
Costs? I’ll have to look into what the fluid coupler is if you think it’s a really good component. And thanks for getting involved in the conversation Ropeshield. Because sounds like you’re the closest to my situation.

Not exactly. Does it have a clutch? The mating between the fly wheel and the shaft or clutch needs to match up. One could swap out the flywheel, but it need to match up. RPM's is controlled by throttle.

Anybody know why Wallenstein doesn't seem to market in the US? Seems they could potentially have a market share here.

I don’t want to mess with the topic, but I feel I got some great info I can work with now...thank you to all who contributed! But anyone have real experience with the 8” Morbark Chippers? Are they any good?
