Natural Re-direct Trick

Hey guys,

Wondering if you could help me. Im sure its been talked about before.

How do you get your climbing system back to you after going through a crotch and not having to go back up and over?

Ive seen it and thought about it alot but never did it so I guess thats why its not in my bag of tricks.

What I'm really looking for is pictures or a quick sketch on paint.

Thanks

just don't pull your tail through the crotch when your done with the redirect then put a marlin spike above your knot and pull the tai back through the redirect

first i lanyard in then with a hitchclimber I put an in line slip knot above the hitch...clip it in with one of the biners usually the top one then i just unclip from my saddle and pull the rope that is over the branch if that makes sense

Thanks guys!
That easy
I dont know why, maybe just cabin fever from the snow, I was thinkin and thought I remembered it was more complicated.

Its best to pull the spliced end of your rope first, this bring you rhitch up to and over the branch but you can get it back if it gets stuck. Once its free of obstructions you can then pull the tail end of the rope to take out the slack and then bring the hitch back down the new route to you.

This way there is 95% chance of success. The original method of just pulling the tail end of the rope has about a 50% chance of getting stuck and then you have no climbing system!

i have definily put myself into some awkward situations with it getting stuck. alternate lanyarding up to the stuck rig with the tail and a blakes hitch... ugh, sucks.

when climbing SRT, and you are worried about your hitch getting stuck, it is easy enough to take the hitch off completely and then it is a clean rope that gets pulled back through, no chance of it getting stuck. If it appears like it is a clear shot, then I just clip the hitch with a slip knot to the rope and pull the hitch and fate over like in normal dDRT.

i usallyl climb within my reach,, thats a trick....but when i cant . i use a pole saw,, 12ft wooden handle , if your rope gets stuck. ask yourself this simple question, did i learn anything?

If you're concerned that the crotch is tight and you may get your rig stuck in it with no means of retrieval, you can always clip the end of your tail to the hitch/terminal end rig when you try to pull it through. Because you're essentially creating a loop there's no worry of running out of line from doing this. Course, ideally you would carefully consider the crotch BEFORE you drop down through it, but at least that way you have a failsafe.

Keep in mind that you also need to have your tail, and yourself,in a suitable position to buck and work your system back through. You dont want to put yourself in an uncomfortable spot.

when ever possible just go around might have to climb with your lanyard a bit more but saves you that hassle moving when your done
