My Whoopie

Re did the whole thing- full fid bury with a short fid taper. The sling is a little shorter but peace of mind is pricelss- more tenex (for a larger sling) isn't.

Norm- I'm learning alot from the suggestions and glad that the replies are getting more consistant. The instructions say no taper at all, just cut the end at an angle. Why?

The more I learn about splicing the more I lean towards Brian Toss' methods, even though they are not exactly manufacturers spec.

Thanks

The more you can taper the bury, the better. Break tests have shown that a gradual taper is kinder to the rope.
Brion Toss has much more experience at splicing than I. I have arborist splicing experience, compared to his marine experience.

This is true, and I have done some of these tests myself. Unfortunately, the effect is rather small, about 10% of nominal rope strength for Tenex hollow braids.

It appears this is strictly an effect of geometry, not material--the individual strands in the splice cover, where the rope has expanded to absorb the core, are not as well aligned with the load as the strands in normal rope, and therefore they are weaker. At the point where a blunt core ends, the cover takes over all the load but the cover strands at that precise point have the weak alignment. This shows up as a 10% reduction in strength, and that is, in fact, where the rope breaks.

A gradual taper does not leave the cover with bad alignment exposed to the full load, or at least greatly reduces the effect, and you end up with nearly 100% rope strength.

This seems like a rather finicky point to me, and I usually make a simple angled cut to give a bit of taper. If you absolutely must have 100% of rope strength, then you will need to make a much more gradual taper.

Norm- Just to clarify- I was comparing manufacturers instr and Brians. Not you and Brian.
I would like I to say I followed manufacturers spec's exactly, but why when there are subtle improvements(like your suggestion) available.

cheers
