My First Video

Most of the one handing I've been seeing lately was unessesary and did nothing to increase production or safety. So why show it? I'm sick of it too, stop putting it in videos. Problem solved.

I salute Mister Sir for putting up an honest portrayal of a typical removal with a bucket.

Line clearance bucket operators that one hand daily to both stay safe and meet production quotas are part of the tree industry too.

Your idealistic expectations of professional climbers abiding by a greenhorn's druthers is touching though I assure you.

I remember the first time I posted pics on the buzz I got called out for only having one tie-in cutting a crane pick. I was defensive at first, but realized it was a blatant violation and could have been easily mitigated. Since then, I've been more conscious of taking a bit more time to install that second tie-in even when cutting close to the ground, just like I made more of an effort to postion properly in order to make a two handed chainsaw cut aloft. It has made me a safer climber and by being safer, I am more sustainably productive.
It also made me more conscious of not posting stuff with blatant ansi violations.

BTW, I'm not saying I don't occasionally one-hand when I feel it's safer or appropriate. But I do feel alot of the cuts made in this video could have been just as easily made with two hands.

One handing, yeah, thats been well covered. People are going to do what they will.
Mister Sir, it looks like there is very little use of your brake while your moving around not cutting. Maybe I'm wrong. That would be my bigger concern as opposed to the one handing, especially if that habit is the same on a rope.

Does that parking space say "Stoner" @ 1:20?

Yeah whatever. It looks to me like Ralph Lauren.

There isn't a forum that I visit or frequent where safety issues aren't slagged on. The amount of chatter about safety on TreeBuzz isn't more or less than other forums...woodworking, climbing/mountaineering, kayak, canoe, bicycle...on and on...

I would like to see less bandwidth used for the one-handing issue. It would be nice to only have the first person mention it and let it go. It's a perpetual sore spot...along with another eternal sore spot...polesaw or pole pruner...hahahhahah!

Its nice to see people take the time to document and share what they do.

Keep it up!

Why does it matter. Show some respect to your elders.

you'll have to come down for a beer some time so we can meet. Maybe you can be down early so you can see how real cutters work. Hey anytime.

Im not reading all this crap. I watched 30 sec. I skipped through afew times but EVRY time I saw you one handing. Im all for one handing. I think its really cool. But I only do it when there is no option. Its whn I am uncomfortable on a long limb or an awkward position. You were in a bucket. Just stop/ lol problem solved. Peace man. Stay safe

Translation: "I can pee farther than you." Brilliant.

Maybe you didn't get the memo:
Step 1- Remove head from anus,
Step 2- Begin typing.

I stood my ground on this one, actually liked the video, because Frax and Rangerdanger were saying the safety police were enough to send them to another forum. They're both passionate about the work and I'd hate to lose contact with anyone like that. I was trying my best to put the issue to rest as well. So here I am as a member of the safety police. Not because I give a hoot how some old pro holds his chainsaw but because these videos are both entertainment and training tools. Anyone new should start out doing it right, right?

Here's the thing. Ansi says don't, we know it causes injuries, we know it's more dangerous. Why defend the practice with such conviction? I don't understand. If you think it's the way who am I to say don't. I really don't care, makes me look better, but stop videoing it and excpect me to give you an atta boy. There's smart one handing and sloppy lazy one handing. Why show off your sloppy lazy work? Bring us your best and if that's it expect some critique. I don't care if this is someones first video I'm sure he knew better. Seems most of the onehanding vids are to get attention. I don't get bored watching good work don't worry. And why answer so many of my own questions in one post? Why?

I think it has more to do with the amount of unpaid work for last season's work through my own horrible record keeping and that I just spent my tax money on a new vehicle. Time to get busy on the no-fun part of the job. -30 doesn't help either. Summer's coming. Sorry for the rant keep them videos coming even the one handers.

When there's as huge a section of the tree industry doing what can be truthfully termed the most vital function our industry provides, keeping the country's lights on, that breaks your proposed greenhorn rule of never one handing as a daily policy?

You're conflating training procedures and practices for beginners and novices, with idiotic rule making that quite effectively hobbles the very best hands on pros doing the actual work that keeps your bloody lights on.

What proposed rule? It already is one. Everyone has the choice to follow the rules or deal with the consequences. Which could include the lawyer pulling your videos off here and showing them in court during the fight for compensation. I'm trying to help you guys here.

There's liabilty and risk for what? To help the company almost break even with their low bids? Sounds like my kind of empolyee, you're hired but try not be too much of a yes man except when customers are listening.
