my FIRST bee hive rescue

If you go the screen route it's a lot easier to do with 2 people and less bees escape while installing it.

One guy holds the screen, the other staples like crazy, both scream like little girls. This method worked well for me and Shawn (now worries, bees are deaf so they won't be startled by the womanly yells, the neighbors might be but not the bees)

That could've made a great live story on your local media - and some well-deserved free recognition.

I'm proud of you, not just for doing it but doing it with class!

best time to lock them in is after dark. If you have access to a smoker carry this with you.....smoke the entrance and cover with screen or burlap.....come back later and do the removal.

try not to drop the section with the hive since it will break up the comb and cover the brood with honey and most likely kill the queen. Your local extension agent will have a list of local beekeepers that can help...

honey beee stings aint that bad either

What is it with silver maples? I was up in one about two weeks ago, way at the top removing a limb, and suddenly I was surrounded by buzzing. About 15 insects of some flavor (I am not an entomologist, I do not know what they were) were buzzing around, and I got stung three times. My partner was in the backyard working out another silver maple, and I started yelling that I was being attacked by bugs. He told me to get my butt to the ground NOW. I paused to get a hanger on my descent, and got chewed out. Lucky me, no allergic reaction to the stings. I am sure they were not bees.

bees are deaf

This is true. An entomologist told me bees don't hear sound as we do.

Bees sense air wave/vibrations through their bodies.
This follows along with other information I've heard about remaining calm around bees since they can 'sense' fear (i.e. more likely they are picking up on your increased heart rate and body heat.)

So FT just remember the bees may not hear the 'womanly yells' but they certainly FEEL them.

I have a good budy who mowing around a yard and just tapped a tree( a tap I checked it out). Well that tap sent a hive on alarm and do to the vibration of the mower thay swarmed it.He was stung twice and beat feet outta there. from what he found out was that they are attracted to the vibrations and upon stinging they release a pheromone that attracts the hive.
