My accident

I was actually wearing a forestry type helmet with no chin strap. It did stay on. My theory has always been Id rather wonder if it helped than wonder if it would have helped. I don't know the answer and I am glad for that.

No the rope types were not the same but there would have been the same out come with what I normally run if it was same length. That and the stopper knot was the problem.

Humor is good... I'm ok with that.

Tricks are something that I came across over life, the main one from higher falls is to protect vital organs, brain, heart and lungs. Let your lower body take the impact, cover your head with your arms and curl into a ball.
At lower hieghts, aikido rolls and other techniques work well, that's where the double arm back slap comes from.
That long fall methods are from the survivors of parachute fails.
One more thing is to expel all air from your lungs before impact.

Ouch! That sucks Mark. Thanks for sharing the story, I'm gonna share this one with every climber I meet this week, I'll leave yer name out though - just call you "some hot shot from out East" haha.

I'm REALLY glad you're OK dude.

For me different lenthgs are different colors. I think I'll go back to labeling with that clear shrink wrap too. And stopper knots are mandatory, especially on crane work when it seems like I always wanna make a quick repel after setting straps and that hook could be way higher than a typical tree TIP.

You lived to tell the story Mark. Thank God... Cameron didn't!

That's two highly skilled, experienced, and safety conscious crane guys from our circle that went down..

Cameron was an eye opener BIG TIME... IMO given your level of experience, this incident should hold near the same weight for us all. Both cause by mental errors..With a slight change of circumstance, this thread could have been your obituary...
Thank you for sharing Mark!
What can we learn from this???? REALLY... what do we need to focus on or do differently?

I have been more aware and vigilant in the way I do things because of recent accidents that were posted here which is why I also posted what happened to me. I was very lucky and hopefully someone else wont experience what I have or worse. Hiding our accidents would be greedy and and benefit no one. I should not be the only one learning from my mistakes.

Daniel, As far as what to learn from my accident:
Always tie a knot in your running end of the rope with a crane and always dump your rope bag out(toss it down) before rappelling down. In my area don't use less than a 150' rope when doing crane work.
When ever using a crane you should be able to reach the ground with the rope you have. Whether you need to do it because you are taking the piece in 1 shot or the crane shuts off or you come in contact with bees etc. You need to be able to get to the ground by yourself with what you have.

I was thinking that if they were the same color that may have accounted for your assumption that it was the longer rope that you usually use. But, since it was a different color I'm wondering where was your at? At what point did you lose track of the rope length? It's really trying to drill down into the finding all the dominoes that had to fall in order for this to happen to you.

How r u feeling today?

Just an update.
Im doing well But at the I want to do everything point, the brace is annoying but I am doing what Im supposed to which is tough. I want to do more but Ive realized I need to heel first. Im going to be fine and 100 percent but cant rush back to lifting etc. I cant wait for next weekend to hang out at geezers with my daughter! And of course the many people I only see a couple times a year.

I'm right there with you, Mark. Toughest part in the process is being so close to getting back to it but still not yet there. Every time I think I'm near ready, I get a reminder of just how much more I need work on before I'm going to be productive without much pain.
