Re: Mt Shasta dead 175\' Ponderosa removal
The mountain has an unusually small amount of snow this year. Global Warming?
The house was built with a corner notch around the trunk.
The Ponderosa had a very slight back lean from the rain gutters to the ground, but was relatively vertical above 10'. This straightness allowed all the wood to be dumped with a tag line.
The drop zone was partially blocked by an oak tree, so a 1' diameter side limb was pruned away so the crew could see what was happening overhead.
The brush was all ziplined down to the trailer hitch on a Jeep. The zipline ran thru a pulley over to the base of the oak, and was retensioned for each batch of limbs. We used webbing slings to choke the limbs to be cut, then clipped a biner thru the sling and onto the zipline. The dead limbs were relatively light, but the wind was keeping them too close to the rain gutters to allow tossing any except the smaller ones. This meant mot of the limbs had to zipped, which accounted for the second day. The video shows a sequence of 6 limbs being zipped, but we usually only cut bunches of 2 or 3.
The top was ziplined, which ensured it would sail clear of the house. It was the heaviest thing that was controlled by rope.
All the wood except the last piece was tipped by hand with a tag line. The butt log was encouraged by the Jeep hauling on the rope thru the pulley mounted on the oak trunk. The lawn became dirt as the work embedded itself and stayed put nicely. Few of the logs bounced or rolled after hitting the ground, which was a relief.
The final comment heard in the video is "That baby needed a little convincing".
