Ms 661's

Re: Ms 661\'s

You can cut a very wide pie big enough to get your saw into far enough to get the middle uncut section.

But be sure to tie the trunk off on the opposite side to insure it doesn't fall towards the pie side and squish you and your new saw! A few strategically placed plastic wedges will keep the trunk from sitting down on your bar once it's completely cut through.

Work safe mate.

Re: Ms 661\'s

Jomoco are you talking about cutting a "second notch" type of a deal? I did this a few times but then learned about cutting out a window which is a much better option. More time consuming but works alot better for me and also a safer option as it gives the tree a shelf to sit on if it were to deside to sit back on the saw. If the window was what you are reffering to ignore this post.

Re: Ms 661\'s

A 36" bar on a 660 will leave approximately a 16" post in the middle of a 7 ft tree. but if you put a nice deep open notch in the front then bore into the middle from the notch you should be able to cut it safely.

Re: Ms 661\'s

You guys got the right idea. Just make dang sure the trunk can't come your way once the middle's cut through!

Maybe do the pie cut, then bore cut the heart before cutting the perimeter.
Less chance of getting squished then.

Re: Ms 661\'s

From what I have heard from my friends in Germany, the 661 is all but finished in design and testing there. They have been appearing at trade shows in eastern and central Europe and word is that they will be out in Germany in October. Likely they will follow in the winter or spring of 2014 in North America and Oz.

New 661 features: SS muffler, spring loaded AV frame (similar to the 441), centrifugal air flow for cleaner air filters (similar to the new smaller saws), air injected Strato Charged porting (similar to the new smaller saws) and they will have the M-tronic autotune computer controlled carb and ignition. It is still unknown if they will have a quad port like the 461 which has better cold starting. It will not be fuel injected, as some had predicted (like the new Stihl cutoff saw has).

Basically it will be a larger version if the 441 M model that is available now. The 441 is only available here in the M model now in the US and the non-M models have been dropped. The 661 will be a lot smoother, have a tad more power than the 660 and a wider power band. Cost is estimated to be about $1300 here in the US, and of course because of tariffs and taxes, it will be way higher in the EU and Oz.

Re: Ms 661\'s

Hey Windthrown and others...

Thanks for the input...I bought the 660 with new 24" and 36" bars...eats the fuel, but eats the wood too :)!! So balances out...I'm quite happy with the purchase...and would recommend the 660...

Best part is not wasting time waiting for a smaller saw to work it's way through medium to large wood...

Re: Ms 661\'s

Good news!

Now if we could only convince the design engineers at Stihl to respect their predecessors and put manual oilers back on their bigger long bar saws!

Old man Stihl would heartily approve such a wise decision I'm sure.

Re: Ms 661\'s

So I was at my local Stihl dealer yesterday. He told me the 660 has been stopped from production. There are approximately 240 660's in the USA Stihl inventory. When they are gone the 661's will start being shipped to dealers.
