Mother of dutch elm resistent Elms dies

i read this article sometime last year about an Elm in N.J. in some graveyard that was thought to be a new breed that was more resistant to Dutch elm.

The new york times reported today that it died and was removed recently.

search the phrase "n.j. Elm" in google news.

Hi,

as i understand this tree could have been more genetic resistant to dutch elm disease. They say the age of the elm was definitly a factor to. And we now all that on an old age you get more likely affected by all sorts of creepy things.

If the offspring is partly elm disease resistant so the tree has a change to grow for some age (like a hundred years) its always good to use that clones. Maybe in future the gens in this clone can be manipulated more effective or (hopefully)nature does itself.

The age seems to be a discussion? Maybe the superintendent of the graveyard counted both spring and summer grow rings. (278years) The contractor counted about 150 rings suggesting it was 150 years. (or the superintendent counted not half the trunk but the whole diameter.)
