More of Prairie Creek

Well, we did it again for a 3rd weekend in a row and completed a section of trial in Prairie Creek. Found some nice trees.

Got rained out on Sunday, but Saturday was really great. One of the trees we found had an undercut in it. Probably put in around the turn of the century.

The burl tree is the same one Mario used for one of his avatars. What a champ it is. And then nearby is some big doubles and triples.

Terri and I will try to make it back this week end if it doesn't rain.

The trees are not going anywhere.

Figure flying into Arcata and getting a rental car from there. Prairie Crk is just 30 minutes north, then Del Norte and Jed Smith redwoods. To the south is Bull creek and Ave of the Giants. All nice and close.

Here's a sucker clump

Cool ...

You found some of the really interesting ones. Not sure if I saw the undercut redwood.

With the burl redwood, you can sure see it takes a remote, a timer longer than about a minute, or a hiking partner to get a good shot from a distance.

Pretty sure I'm going to go on James Irvine or Miners Ridge trails next time in that park. Sort of hoping for May-ish.

Next time you are in that park, try a shot of the redwood which looks like a half skull, from the south looking north. I've seen a photo from the south before and it shows how meaty the trunk is. Your photo, like mine, is east looking west.

The Irvine and Miner's ridge trails are some long hikes unless you have someone pick you up at the beach, or visa versa. You be looking at about 13 miles of up and down. Doable for a young buck, but not for me.

Terri and I hike about 3 to 4 miles and then double back,, and by the time we get to the truck we've about had it.

Have a short section to catch up between the Wagner Grove and the Ossogan trail. Toss a coin on which to take after that.

It would not be a loop for me, since it's long. I'd just pick one or the other, and go maybe 2 miles in and back on one. The the same on the other another day or visit. For the other end, I may go near Fern Canyon someday and go in and out from there too. Yeah, 4 to 5 miles is my max.

Fantastic pictures Jer! Love the one of you standing underneath the burl.

I'm sure that Terri loves those trees and hiking just as much as you do. You guys make a good pair hiking and taking pitures together.

the pictures are really great, i am taking my next vacation there so keep all the info coming, the hikes sound really good, except i agree with a couple others i would have to do the shorter ones!

Here's about the only hiking site I refer to from my redwood pages - redwood hikes dot com

www.redwoodhikes.com

As posted earlier, some of the best hiking is clustered to the north. So when you go to that hiking site, scroll down to the green tables, and be sure to look at these parks:

Jedediah Smith
Prairie Creek
Redwood National
Humboldt Redwoods

You could add more, but those should be the core. Each trail you pick, has its own page, description, some images, mapes, elevation changes.

That site also provides some of the best maps. Order in advance, and you can study in detail.

Mario, that is some great info for those that plan to come out and see the redwoods.

For lodging near the core of the best parks and trails I would highly recommend the Ravin's Wood motel in Klamath.

Very neat and clean.

Howdy.

Does this look like the spot? I found a "Ravenwood" Motel there, and this is the address on the website.
