more kboom

Sorry for the music. Definately not a favorite.
now to the other critiques. There are alot of valid points. That is why I did this one. Most of my pics do come off smooth andif the snap cuts are done right there is no "tug". As I said before, The first pic did not bounce, It sat in place and I picked it up. What looks like bounce is when I boomed the main boom up and the jib down. A couple of the other cuts I had to much wood between the cuts and the one near the wire could have been rigged better.
No disrespect taken. This is what this board is all about. I am hopeing to learn something from this as well as others. We can all benefit by others mistakes and successes.

Here are pics from a job overa bank. I had all hydaulic an 2 manual extensions out.

Not my favorite song either, but as many videos as you've done, how many more Metallica or ACDC songs can you run?

there is way too much movement on the crane reguardless of any justifications. the last top cut that went sideways would be enough to not show a video to be bragging about. those cuts happen maybe once a year perhaps twice. but really you are using a crane for goodness gracios take your time and make the cuts count. big equipment big consequences when things get crazy.

Seems to me working with a knuckle boom (crane) like that would take some getting use to. That one pick looked like some better postioning of the slings would have made for a smoother pick but hea you cant get them all right. I am just jealus because we still have to rent our crane. Hopefully Not for long though. How much extension does that thing have? and who makes it? Very Nice job!!

Nice photos looking down the bank Mark! As for the video none of those picks hurt your K'boom. The log pick (at the end) only looked so bad because the boom wasn't pretensioned enough! But look at the position you were in! Under the lowest wires on the pole with the main boom below horizontal AND the jib OVERCENTER 20%!!! You knew if you over-tensioned the log pick, it would've popped up & taken out the wires!!! Sure if you used a 100 ton crane at that radius it wouldn't have bounced like that but a straight boom crane couldn't have made that log pick from under the wires!!! (shorter slings would've helped on the log pick IMO)

Exactly, I was wishing I had a couple at the time.

The shorter slings would have helped because by the time I tensioned them I was hitting the bottom of the wire. If I had shorter slings I could have taken up enough tension so the piece would not have dropped. When the boom is horizontal you need to pretension it so the flex has been taken out of the boom.

I'm amazed at what you guys do with those Kbooms. Mike, although a conventional crane wouldn't pick under those wires you could agree that it would not have been necessary I believe the Kboom could not have picked the butt logs over the wires without the use of a winch line. I would be curious what the rating was at that radius. If it was close to the 2500lbs that it was picking and you had that much deflection bouncing over capacity with the shock loading you may not have any damage today but it would shorten the longevity of the unit maximizing it's capacity on a regular basis. I have no experience with these booms other than watching the video's you both post so please don't take it so much as critisism because it is more fascinination. One more, in a situation like in the video with the utility wires, do you have an action plan in place incase you had an accident and the guy in the tree has the controls? Similar to an aerial rescue with a bucket truck where a ground guy can operate the bucket from the lower controls. It looks like in the video the utility line takes a pretty good hit. Keep up the great video's and pic's you both are great assets to this site and the industry thank you for sharing.

The boom can be operated at the base also. Similar to a bucket truck. Switch a key and start operating. As for an emergency plan it would be like a bucket truck.

What kind of kboom is that? The company I work for just got a National N135 9.5 ton kboom on a 2001 Sterling 59k GVW chassis. Its a bit different than our old '83 F-700 with an even older '78 3.5 ton Hiab kboom. Our new kboom is pretty big, yours looks huge.
