My only gripe with the GRCS is the financial kick in the balls for it

That’s how we used to do it. It works for sure, but it can be time consuming if you need to take a second bite, or a third. With a limited ground crew the less steps involved is a plus. The GRCG goes from lifting to lowering seamlessly. But it is costly no doubt.I have lifted a tree with my maasdam set up in a 2:1 over a stein bollard. Can lift closer to 3000lbs and use gear I already have.
It's even fairly quick to pretension, use a rigging prussik to snub it off and transfer the line to a Porta wrap, and use the grcs on a second lineThat’s how we used to do it. I have used similar capstan winches before and one thing is common with them. It’s really easy to over tension stuff. Be careful! I believe they say only 1 guy on the handle- there’s good reason for that. It's even fairly quick to pretension, use a rigging prussik to snub it off and transfer the line to a Porta wrap, and use the grcs on a second line
The massdam is not a capstan winch as far as I know. The winch used on the GRCS is designed for sailing boats, mostly racing yachts. It’s purpose is to haul sheets or pull up sails under really high loads and be able to release them under control and quickly.@Stephen Moore; When you refer to "capstan winches" being able to over tension stuff, you are referring to the GRCS, and not the Maasdam rope puller, correct? Thanks.

My buddies sailboat doesn't have self tailers... So going back from the grcs was kind of painful lolExactly what he said. We just sold our sailboat a few months ago. My wife, who is my groundie was also my mate on the boat, so the GRCS was familiar territory.
Some of them don’t, but many of the fast boats are fitted with them. Some are electric autos too. In any event it must be understood these devices can severely overload a system. My buddies sailboat doesn't have self tailers... So going back from the grcs was kind of painful lol

Whatch any major sailin race and guys will be cranking hard on these exact winches. No difference, they are the same.
