MINI SKID STEERS

are those mini skid stweers worth it to buy?
they seem versitile enough to justify buying one with a grapple.
we are in the market for something like one, but have never used one.
any advice?

I got one and it also grinds stumps, drags brush, pulls trees and spars over on their hinges, takes the kids for a ride, man if you get all the attachments it'll even rake up!

Best darn thing I bought.

Here's a link to a vid also

There's many different makes etc, choose wisely.

Ive been running them since 98, they work like 3 men when it comes to dragging brush & logs. Hey Ekka do you have that Kanga 20hp Honda stumper? I have not been able to find one in the US. Do you have any pics of it Check out my skid grapple feeding the chipper (attach didn't work 1/7)

Can you guys see that video? I can't. Mango weren't you hot over the bobcat MT is that what you bought? Heres a different one see if it works (attach didn't work 1/7)

Hey TNT

Neither of the two pics or whatever you put up are showing for me, dead link.

I have a 24HP Honda grinder, and modded it to go hard.

This thread and view huge video of the machine and the mods we do plus how it goes now.

If you were going to get one I'd suggest buying the shell and cutter wheel assy then bolting on a 25hp Kohler in the USA, the Honda engine sucks for the grinder, the Kohlers govenors are much faster and efficient holding the revs better and they seem to have better carburators which aren't as touchy to dirty filters and don't have places where dust can get in other than via the filter!

WOW, watched your mod video, couldn't you make more money being an engineer or video producer, probably not as much fun as trees though.
The best Engineer is a guy like you that actually uses his design day in day out. Not sure why my Videos didn't work. Back to that Kanga I got a qoute in the States for 13 large is that what you pay down under?

This one should play, I am working with some engineers to build a reasonabley priced stumper that works. This is my prototype. It has the Kohler Engine.

Thing works good, my crews like it, the Thomas mini can handle it real well, visability of the wheel could be alot better. What scares me the most is you can grind a stump up on a 5' wall - guess where the chips fly. Does the Kanga allow you to grind at all lift hieghts and how is the visability?

Ekka, I'm such a rookie at this attachment biz obviously. Can I have your email and maybe you could give me a few tips? /forum/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Thanks

Sure

The kanga grinder is around $15000 Aussie.

Yes you can grind at different hts but when you buy them they have a chain and locking pin to stop you lifting the head up ... everyone takes that off!

How much does that unit in the video and pic you have cost in the USA and is it a 25HP Kohler.

Do you know what the engine RPM is and the Cutter wheel rpm is and the dia of the cutter wheel to the tips of the teeth.

I did some homework in this area and found that soft to hard timber's cutting speed is between 6000sfpm and 10000sfpm which equated to an ave 1800rpm on the cutter wheel dia I have, the idiots who geared mine had the cutter wheel doing 2500rpm and bragged how it turns stumps into sawdust/powder ... dumb asses, you need to cut it not pound it. Also it left the machine with little torque.

I swear by Rayco Superteeth, those 1/2" ones in pockets just get bent or snapped now.

Looks OK, as it is fairly long it may be a little more difficult to turn and see.

I'd have to get a close look on how it's cutter wheel assy is held in and bearings etc.

I think you should install a heat shield around the muffler and get a centrifugal pre cleaner fitted to that air cleaner assy.

The vid had no sound.

TNT, I don't remember being hot for a specific machine, mostly the grapple. I ended up buying a Thomas GT25 Two Speed. Great Machine despite not yet having the grapple. Had great support from the sales team at Walker Equipment in Markham On. I don't use it enough, as a really small company, but it is an investment in my ability to use my back after 40. I've been doing treework since 16, I am 28 and I have some issues already with the back.

Eric I'll email you
Mangoes, I thought you demoed the Bobcat MT? That 25GT is a real nice ride on machine. I don't know why you would walk behind one, if you had your choice to ride. I've been happy with my wheeled Thomas's. Are you pushing any snow with it yet? Check out the counter wieght design very simple it will help you lift alot more.

Eric You are not only good you are quick. Thanks for your help. When I sent you this Clip I didn't expect to get a commercial, I just wanted to show how these litte Minis handle a 25'long 10" cottonwood lead and the ease of feeding the chipper. Now don't get ticked at me (TD) for blatent self serving commercialization of buzz webspace. So here goes:
I like the Music Selection
1.12 mins and 4.25mb in wmv streaming format

You are fricken good at this producing stuff(maybe I'm 2 bi-ased) Thanks again

Dave, is that a plate for the user to stand on?

[/ QUOTE ]

Mark, yep, more feet space & a counterwieght, simple enough to make it adds another ~90#s to the rear of the machine and gives you room to stack on another 1 or 2 more Human counterwieghts. The Thomas seems to keep lifting with no trouble. WE can drag some pretty big logs around.

Man your too young to have back issues, I'd say you are smart to think that way, the machines are cheap compared to a back injury. That machine will last you a long time especially if your the only operator. Wish I had one when I was in the field everyday, mucho moons ago. /forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif
