Have you tried 1" tubular webbing, put a little shoe goo or fabric paint to stiffening it up a little bit.
Cheap and pulls thru croches better.

Thanks Richard - I think that's simply the best way to go for now. It's just a shame I've just put in a big order to Treestuff (and didn't include that). Looks like I'll have to source something local for now (shipping to Canada is pricey).

Have you tried using some flexible electrical conduit? The Dan House cambium savers are just that with some steel inserts at the ends for durability
