Mid-week weekend anyone?

What work schedule do you keep?

If my wife didn't have a set m-th schedule, I'd work weekend when the neighbors are home and people are off of work to have consultations and bids.

Years ago I used to work Monday-Friday with all day Saturday doing bids.

The past couple of years, I used to work only Monday - Thursday. All day Friday doing bids. Then, I'd get a two day week end. (I realized I had a family to tend to also). But, the business doesn't make any money those stagnant days.

Now, I (the owner) would like to work partial days in the field. Get some bids and calls done before dinner and have nothing to do, but whatever, with my family at night.

So, that is one of my reasons for wanting to hire a seasoned climber. I need someone to releave me of my post.

From a business perspective, I want to maximize making money 6 days per week. This means overtime for employees.

i do mon. thru sat. i choose rainy days for paper work, and sunday well lets see i try to rest some. i take two afternoons to call on people through the week.

I'd still not be able to work Sunday here due to ordinances restricting power tool usage in many towns. The other problem I have with mid-week "weekends" (having done them in a previous career) is most everyone else is working so there's not many to hang with.

As you say Rob, noise / noise ordinances can be an issue. We just did a building clearance for a commercial building. A repeat touch-up customer. No power tools during hours in which people might be getting massages, tattoos, or dental work.

I can imagine that a chainsaw or blower would through off any of their concentrations, to the customer's dismain. Kinda like us working with a yipping or barking neighbor dog. Hard to relax and focus.

For a small pruning job without a chipper (trailer or dispose on site), I think that it could be a good thing on occasion. A lot of weekend events (we have lots in the summer in Olympia) and other people's weekend schedules could make it inconvenient.

Jamin-

Do you aim for four 10-hour days or four 8-hour days, now.

I try for 4 10's, m-th, as light allows, and projects dictate. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday can all end up with bids/ consultations, but I like to keep it to one of those days.

Here is my schedule:
Mondays full day tree work no estimates unless it is vital and usually it is. Tuesdays are the same. I try to take Wednesdays off for maintenance, bills, or whatever but usually Tuesday night I schedule in that half day pruning job for wednesday. Thursdays look a lot like monday and tuesday and friday I like to schedule an easy job, but that never happens and then I go do an estimate at 8 at night. I try not to work on the weekends but, you guessed it, it happens more often then I would like to admit. And just so you know, I have ten years perfecting that schedule!
