Microwave popcorn

After trying too many microwave popcorn brands and being disappointed mostly because it being too salty I bought a bag of popping corn and proper oil. Making it in the stove counts as cooking right?!

The bag is gone now. Might be time to try our microwave again

Any recommendations?

Does a bowl of popcorn count as part of my veggie intake for the day? A former president counted ketchup as a veggie serving
Steer clear of microwave popcorn! My old business partner went on to be a chemical supply house sales rep and they handled one of the ingredients in microwave popcorn, all microwave popcorn. It is some seriously nasty shit. He was telling me that the normal MSDS are a page or two but that chemical is twenty pages deep and is a serious carcinogen.
Just steer clear of any brand of microwave popcorn.
And buying the kernels and heating some oil or air popping is best and tastes better.

Popcorn in a wire basket over and open fire might have some advantages:
Smokey flavor (at least some aroma directly from the fire !)
Toasted popped kernels
? ? ?

Anyone ever use a wire mesh basket (w/ a long wire handle) over an open fire (fire-place, camp-fire, etc) ?
I've seen them, and my grandmother had one. But I never seen it used.

Seems like it would require a lot of attention, to keep popped kernels from burning, etc.

When I was about 8 or so we had a metal mesh one and then one that was sheetmetal. Both had sliding tops.

Like marshmallows...most batches got a bit burnt which kinda took the cool factor out of the process. It was good cooking education for us kids though. If one batch got burnt it was tossed into the fire. The cooker cooled a little and got wiped out and a new batch cooked. We got better after a few burnt batches.

You can put regular popcorn in a brown paper bag and pop it in microwave.

I prefer it on the stove - pop it in canola oil. If we run out I can just use my bar and chain oil...

Well, I was going to share this but I'm too late to the party to be original. Oh, well.

We use brown paper lunch sacks. Put 1/3 cup kernels & 1tsp oil & 1/2 tsp salt in the bag. Shake. Microwave for 2 minutes (put on a plate if you don't want the oil getting the microwave floor greasy). Shake it, pour out & enjoy.

Hope this helps. PLUS, it allows YOU to be in control of the ingredients, RE @flushcut post on the chemicals.

Update

Over the weekend I bought a popper. Brand new and $10 for a $25 microwave popper. I’m heading in to do grocery shopping right now. Popcorn and fixins are in the list

Can I count popcorn as a veggie on my daily list of nutrition?

Is corn a vegetable?
Short answer: YES

Longer answer:
Whole corn, like you eat on the cob, is considered a vegetable. The corn kernel itself (where popcorn comes from) is considered a grain. ... To complicate things a little more, many grains including popcorn are considered to be a fruit. This is because they come from the seed or flower part of the plant.

So corn is both a fruit and a vegetable, as well as a grain? Great, that makes a balanced diet so much easier to maintain! Scrapple and Cornmeal Mush, with a bit of maple syrup of course, will cover all the food groups at once!

First batch. One scoop. 1 tblsn butter. 4:30 minutes. Needs more time and more butter.

@Tom Dunlap
I bought a 1.5 qt version of your microwave popper for $8.88. (grocery store)
For my 1st batch, as you suggested, I added 2 Tblspn of butter to the top.
It did NOT work as well as hoped.

Most of the energy went into melting, and then cooking the butter; NOT popping the corn.
Lots of kernels left after 5 min.; and some were burnt .................... Trash.

To be fair, my corn was a little on the old side. Fresher corn would pop easier.

I might try:
1. Fresh corn
2. Pop ~ 1/2 of batch
3. Very quickly add butter
4. Finish popping
