Jesse, I use it on my lanyard and have never had the least problem with it, no slipping. It seems to work the exact same as if it had the cable in place....pull rope one way thru it and the rope slides, pull it the other way and it locks instantly.
I actually replaced the wire one time and the new one seemed to fray and break so quickly that I figured I'd try it without
