Men who don't wear gloves, step forward.

But generally speaking I prefer climbing and working most trees without gloves.

[/ QUOTE ]Maybe that is simply it. Maybe some day I will get infections and arthritis or even break a nail. For now I just ground my soul with the touch of trees.

I do prefer to climb with no gloves. But in the winter I will wear gloves if cold or my hands are not tough enough, BUT if I was more safe; I think I would wear them all the time.

Occationally, in the summer, something will happen and I'll think to myself, SEE, IF I was wearing gloves I would not have to wait for that to heal.

IF I climbed like most people with a hitch cord that gets hot, I think I would wear them all the time.

But I transformed mostly from my climbing line tail as the prussic to a spider jack.

I do climb on a split tail now and then and that New Zealand stuff seams to be cooler.

In my first year or two of climbing for my own business (1995 or 1996), I slipped and hands got caught under the lanyard on a rough bark mature black cherry as I started up the tree. I still have the scars on the tops of my fingers from the meat that was lost.

If I was wearing gloves, I probably would have had little injury.

Then, the spring of this year 2012, a similar thing happened. I was talking while starting to climb with a lanyard, in a unique circumstance (won't ellaborate for fear of you bashing me)and I gaffed out, hands under the lanyard, lost some skin.... Took two steps to fix myself and slipped again.... Lost more skin.

What sucks about those things isn't so much the pain at the moment, that's not a big deal; but the oozing and repeated bumping for the next few weeks. Having to put on ointment, band-aides and electrical tape every morning.

I think you all that wear gloves all the time are smarter people.

I just like the feel of my real hands too much in the summer to give it up and will deal with the injuries.

I am hereby bashing myself.

Were you wearing pole gaffs or tree gaffs when you gaffed out X?

I also wear gloves when craning with steel chokers....nasty!

Re: Men who don\'t wear gloves, step forward.

I recently rigged out a pine top with at least 1 wrap less than was needed. My hands were shiny for the rest of the day. I held it long enough to get off the house then just let it fly. I lost a couple callouses that day. My wife says she loves it bc she doesnt have to shave her legs often since I cant tell the difference. I do however keep a couple pairs of atlas gloves for special occasions which is mostly cold whether.

All in all I prefer no gloves.

Re: Men who don\'t wear gloves, step forward.

I always wear gloves when I climb, just the thinnest nitrile they make. But, on a side note, I used to be a Pro Downhill Mtn Bike racer a few years ago (seems like a lifetime) and I NEVER wore gloves. I could not get the "feel" of the handlebar with even the thinnest glove on. A crash at 30 mph on the woods with no gloves on will mess your hands up so eventually I sometimes wore a thin glove but I hated it! On rope, in this lifetime, I love the grip of the thin nitrile's, but they do get caught in things every once in awhile and nothing is more annoying! But man, they DO stink after a week or so!!!

depends on the type of tree. rough bark and lots of handsaw cuts with grabbing branches, gloves. smooth bark and grabbing branches gloves. no grabbin branches, no gloves. usually but the boss likes us to wear those blue atlas gloves.

Re: Men who don\'t wear gloves, step forward.

I quit wearing gloves because I was tired of having doughy hands. I got into tree work through rock climbing and if I wear gloves all day every day the calluses just peel off. I still wear gloves if I'm working in a sappy conifer or something with gnarly thorns (and usually when its cold out) but I'd say I'm gloveless 75% of the time. I prefer being gloveless when it comes to grip as well, I think that wonder gloves slip like crazy and atlas' will usually start slipping on mw within a couple of hours. Hell, maybe I just have super sweaty hands. I definitely deal with more cuts and scrapes on my hands but I guess I'm pretty used to that since I've been rock climbing for the last 15 years. Makes a world of difference in how well my calluses hold up though. And I always throw on some leathers when I get on the ground.

Re: Men who don\'t wear gloves, step forward.

I used to prefer no gloves. I started wearing the atlas fits with the finger tips cut off. I don't miss bare hands at all. My finger tips look like garbage but I get extra grip and get to keep my finger dexterity.

Re: Men who don\'t wear gloves, step forward.

Cold and wet I will go for some smurf gloves.
Cold and snowy I stand by the cheap kinkos. When it gets stupid cold (single digits) I use hand warmer packs on the backsides of the hands. They hands down work better the any $100+ pair of ski gloves ever. Most pro patrollers here use kinkos!

Re: Men who don\'t wear gloves, step forward.

What are Kinkos? Generally don't wear them unless I am lowering or working around Poison Ivy.

Re: Men who don\'t wear gloves, step forward.

Gloves for cold weather only, or picking up thorny bushes like Rose or Barberry. I much prefer to FEEL the tree/rope/carabiner and I purposely slow down a bit and visually double check everything in winter. My grip on rope is better than any leather glove and most "sticky" gloves.

Re: Men who don\'t wear gloves, step forward.

My first couple of years I thought gloves are for pusseys
Now I know better after some serious injuries and problems with bones and tendons in my fingers.

Use the gloves every day, lots of grip and less swollen finger joints and pain.

For me the Showa optigrip 340 beats all the rest, perfect glove with perfect grip even when wet ! Before I used some gloves that even performed better when wet ( zorb-it from Best glove company ) but at the end of every day my hands felt like sponges in the shower, caused by the silicones in them.....

Since I start using gloves every day out there my hands sure are less beaten up and painfull.

But remember.....gloves are for pusseys ;-)

Re: Men who don\'t wear gloves, step forward.

I use leather palmed 1/2 finger gloves. Leaving my fingers exposed keeps the dexterity need for opening biners and fiddly stuff, but having leather palms are great for friction as for a grip 90% of my movements up a rope is by a hand ascender since i've been climbing SRT

Re: Men who don\'t wear gloves, step forward.

I usually only wear gloves in winter and thorny things, but the colder weather is among us and i just cant seem to get my hands warm. That is my winter rival! I cant seem to ever warm my cold fingers! I guess its just bad blood flow :(

Here's a solution...from a former naked handed climber.

Instead of cutting off all of the tips, just cut off the very ends of the thumb and forefinger. Leave them a little long and you'll have half protection.

Another, better tip that I learned from cold weather...single digits..pffft...that's cool for Minnesota...cut a vertical slit in the tips of the thumb and forefinger. Then, when you need your finger tip must slip it out...tuck them away most of the time!

Re: Men who don\'t wear gloves, step forward.

Good tips Tom and just in time. It was 26 this morning when I woke up. I'll try the slits this winter for sure.

Re: Men who don\'t wear gloves, step forward.

When i first started too climb gloves all the way but than switched too no gloves an when doing some trees the bark is like razor blades an when Id get moving around in the tree between the rope an the sun beating on the rope an when doing lots of riggings my hands started too burn from the rope running throw my hands an one day I was climbing up a black locust tree just too set the bull line too pull the tree over I got a thorn in the palm of my hand thats it gloves from now on an helps with vibrations from the saws but what ever you feel best with keep on climbing

Re: Men who don\'t wear gloves, step forward.

Snowed on us all day yesterday, in lake placid.
Been using light weight Dakine leather hands for climbing. Lasted All last season. Kinkos for ground work. Snow sealed all.
Sure was nice feeding the chipper with soft shell jacket and gloves.
