massive cherry

I found this beauty in a buddy's woods. Initial rough estimates put this tree ahead of the current national champ in height and spread. It forks at about 3' and biggest stem is only 30" or so, preventing it from becoming the new champ

Either way, it gives me an excuse to climb it and get an official measurement

I'll post the results and pictures after the climb.

What species? I've didn't know any cherries had bark like that. Nice tree.

[/ QUOTE ] ,,,, correct the bark is furrowed .... American Black Cherry does not have such bark

O i dunno. As I'm reminded when i look into the mirror, things change with age.

Hey let us know how the tape-drop height measurement compares to the previous one, and how that was done if you know.

Prunus serotina. 100% sure. As far as I know the tree has never been measured. The initial estimates are by me and are around 90' height, 80' average spread. The north/south spread looks to be around 100'.

It might be a few days before I can get in it though... I twisted my knee pretty good pruning a corkscrew willow this evening(go figure), so I'll have to see how this turns out

Does it have much decay? I've never seen a big black cherry that doesn't have bark missing in places on the trunk.

Zero decay in this one. It's only defect (visible from the ground) is a 20" limb that peeled off the south side about 30' up.

Interesting, I don't recall seeing any Prunus species locally that ever get bark like that. Thanks for posting.

Its a species that I'm not familiar with, and it looks different from a lot of cherry here.

Wikipedia has a short page on this one:

I will be climbing what I believe to be the State Champ here in RI very soon... It's approx. 30" X 70'H X 70'CS. I'll post some pics. This one's healthy as a horse as well.
