The Monday death of a Valley Grove man needed little investigation - it already has been deemed an accident by the Ohio County Sheriff's Department.
Lloyd Klages Sr., 71, was killed shortly after 9 a.m. Monday when a tree fell on him outside his Trestlework-Rogers Road home, according to Sheriff Pat Butler. He said Klages was working alone outside the home to either cut down the tree or knock it to the ground when he was killed. According to another source, Klages was cutting branches from the tree when it fell.
"He was cutting a tree down," Butler said. "We don't know if something was stuck in the tree. It was less than a half-hour before he was found."
A member of Klages' family reported the accident. Several sheriff's deputies, at least one emergency medical squad from the Valley Grove Fire Department and an Ohio County coroner responded to the scene. Klages' body was transported to Wheeling Hospital.
Family members tried to assist Klages following the accident, according to Butler.
"It has been ruled an accidental death," he added. "The coroner already signed off on it."
