I can't afford to look at the attached images you put up above because at 1.5 MB or so apiece they're just too big to interest me and my modem, even though I'd like to see them some day...

crapola. I forgot to scale 'em down. Usually I can make them quite manageable by cropping the edges and shrinking the pic.

I'll work on it.

The video is a .mpg I assume. It is a 30 second clip that I made on my digicam last night. Maybe if I scaled down the size it might work better.

Glen, other dialuppers, and anyone else who prefers not to open obnoxiously large photos- Sorry about that. I've edited them all and they are now more reasonable.

nick, who didn't mean to do it

Treemachine helped me put this up on arbori$t$ite. I thought I'd share the link over here.

Isn't it great to be able to share links, and all sorts of information between all the websites and forums we all look at? /forum/images/graemlins/handkiss.gif It's great when we all can get along!

Glen, it's like less than .5mb now, so it should be alright for ya!

I found a nice little knot (name currently unknown) that seems to solve this problem.....help me figure out what this knot is called.

Nick,

Your video on AS downloaded fine for me (with a slow 26.4 kbps phone connection). Nice clean hitch! I think you should name it. Until then I'll call it Nick's doubled girth hitch with a half twist (or, since the girth hitch is also called the Larksfoot, Nick's twisted foot /forum/images/graemlins/tongue.gif ).

I will not be so bold as to name this knot just yet. I admit that I do not recall seeing it before elsewhere. But I am but one person.

I'll think of an appropriate name for it later, but first I want to be sure that it already doesn't have one. I find it hard to believe I'm the first to stumble upon this.

More importantly, what downfalls do you see with this knot? TreeSpyder pointed some out to me, perhaps he could share here so they can be taken into consideration.

I hope y'all like the knot. I'm trying to find other places where it beats out the girth hitch.

Nick,

Perhaps you can share TreeSpyder's comments. I hesitate to ask him because his posts take too much energy to translate.

Usually a double girth, i think of as a prussik/ a double death choke to understand it's mechanics; but the crossed turn in NickKnot is a type/evolution of round turn, so double does seem appropriate.

The knot would be more secure, but wasn't the focus of the weakness noted i think, but rather the flat rope getting a crossed turn form 2 compressions across it's most levrageable width/ axis. And that crossed turn being away from the ring that would otherwise help fortify the webbing from as much deformation across the weakest/width axis. Thus the number of turns compressing this more delicate axis are increased, as well as, the position on the webbing compressed for those turns. This compounds a few differnt times; specific weakness/Achille's Heal here in webbing over just a girth hitch in same webbing i would think.

A round cord would be more leverageable around the carabiner(were webbing bends on flat/Zer0 loss dimension), but (cord)less leverageable/not as weakened under crossed turn i would think here.
