Thank you! I like this axe better than most people.I’m happy for ya. Seriously. I know how shitty it is to lose a special ax.
Would an Apple luggage tag tracker be useful ?And maybe tie on some pink flagging tape
@Reach, @ShadowscapeI have always heard of that simply called a Brush Hook.
If I owned a cell phone it might. But I don't. My Princes Phone cord won't reach that far, and probably wouldn't work if it did. I refuse to join the 21st century.Would an Apple luggage tag tracker be useful ?
@Shadowscape , I just ordered a much younger relative of Roxanne !I found it! I found Roxanne! It was in amongst 1/2" diameter aspen growth that I had walk earlier and must have been within a few feet of and didn't see it. Poor girl must have about given up hope of being found. I think I will treat her handle to a new coat of oil tonight. All is right with the world.![]()

Don't know her name yet.
Roxy, Marvalous, ? ? ?
She probably won't come out to visit the woods as often as Roxanne, but I'm sure she'll look good when she does !
I like good tools.
Do you coat the head w/ oil (mineral?) to store ?
Wax or oil handle ?
@Shadowscape
No wax or varnish. Tung oil, or boiled linseed oil. Pour a little on the palm of your hand and rub it into the wood until the handle seems almost dry. You are letting it soak into the wood rather than applying it as a coating. Keep rubbing with your palms until it has soaked in. Wipe the handle down well with a clean rag to remove any excess and to dry the handle.
Keep her sharp. Doing so after each use makes it so easy.
If you are anything like me you will end up ordering an extra leather cover. I seem to go through one just about every year. They don't wear out, they are just small enough that I forget they are on and sink the head into a stump with the sheath still on.
She will be a pride and joy for you, and something to pass on to future generations to come.
I forgot to mention the head. Yes, it gets a drying off and a thin coat of bar oil, usually, because it is what I have on hand most of the time. The sheath doesn't go back on until it is completely dried out. I don't oil the sheath because mine don't last that long that I need to take care of the leather, as mentioned before. Someday I may learn, but not yet.@Shadowscape
You never oil the steel head or sheath, even after working in wet / humid conditons ?
..... for storage ?

This particular axe was a gift to me from some fellow workers. It came about because I carved a handle for an axe I had myself because I didn't like the shape of the handles axes come with. It was pretty crude, but it worked for me. Without my knowledge that crew photographed it and measured it and sent it off to Gransfors Bruks and asked them to make me a version of their Scandinavian Forest axe with that type of handle. And I am told that they also requested a certain forger to create the head. I didn't get to pick anything about the axe. I didn't even know about it until they presented it to me. The handle is beautiful, and I suspect that it was chosen by the forger, but I don't know that for a fact.@Shadowscape
Were you able to pick your wood handle from a supply, or was it choice by luck ?
Replacements ?
Why did they stop using metal wedges to secure the axe head ?

I'm told you can still request a certain forger when ordering from Gransfors, but not a custom built handle. I suspect you can also select a specific handle from their stock as well. If you order from a company like WesSpur, you get what you get, but it will still be a dandy.
I don't know about the metal vs wood wedge thing. Mine has a round metal wedge. The head has never loosened in the slightest and is as tight as it was when it was brand new.
Actually my cell phone service is similarly terrable.@GregManning
I will break out my camera and do that for you. Not likely to see anyone with a cell phone for a few days.
We still don't get cell service here very well. It is sort of a, go outside by the birch tree and stand on your left foot, then maybe you might get a bar. There is one spot on the road about a 1/4 mile from here where you see the locals talking on their phones. They call the spot, THE PHONE BOOTH.
Here you go... RoxanneActually my cell phone service is similarly terrable.
Years ago I tested several providers; Verizion was the best.
Still Verizon is mostly 1 bar; or "no service".
1/4 miles away & it's fine.
I called Verizon; they said the probrable cause was that I was "too close to a tower" ! ! !![]()

Thanks !Here you go... Roxanne
You are going to ask about the handle, so I will tell you before you ask. It is quite a bit straighter than the standard forest axe handle that comes on them. It may not be noticeable so much in the picture, but if you put it side by side with the normal one you would see the difference right off.
Oh, and I was wrong. It has a flat steel wedge. My felling axe has the round steel wedge.

And if you are interested in the cordage, it is just cordage that was dipped in epoxy and wrapped on. It is that spot where everyone splinters their handle. Something I put on several years ago as a little bit of protection.
