Hey Chris, I am originally from the south burbs of chicago...around Oak Lawn...Crestwood, Chicago ridge...I used to work for The Care of Trees and have worked with Norm Hall on more than one occassion. I have recently moved to South Carolina to work with another company and help a friend of mine, but the training and education you can gain from long time professionals like Norm and Tod is absolutley invaluable. Contacting them is a great move. I am just curiose as to where on the south side you are located...if i were still in town i would have liked to help you out in person, but like i said, i live in the south now.

back to the program.... Buddy of mine worked for a spiker. Once he saw him climb he started buying up any gear he suggested.. helped that he was a toy nut...

If you have no other ties to this guy then definitely get with a company that shares your philosophy and goals. Start calling them and let them know your ambitions not that your looking for a job!

Thats very good advice connecting with experienced skilled guys from whom you can learn is essential in our profession, and the fact that few do so without a financial angl will mark you above the crowd if you can afford to do it.

Stop working with the spiker guy. He will most likely not accept your new proper methods and you certainly won't have a chance to use them at work! My guess is that he doesn't adhere to industry standard pruning practices either.

The reason I work for the guy is first and foremost the money. I need the second job to keep the wife home with the kids. Secondly, he allows me to work when I can. Not many people would allow me to come to work 2 or 3 days a week and sometimes cancel because of unexpected overtime. I have already talked to him about climbing. He is not going to be able to climb much longer due to his age and health. If and when I climb for him he does not care what method I use as long as I can do it effectively. I do not know of another company that works out here that does things any differently. However, if you are out there and willing to work around my schedule, and willing to do the job the way I want you to do it please send me a PM.

Chris

Phil, I am sorry you are not around here anymore. I am going to contact Norm and hopefully we can work something out.
I live in Homewood, my FF job is in Matteson, and the tree guy is based in Homewood.

Chris

I'd say it sounds like you have a good set up with him, especially if he is willing to keep an open mind on your climbing style. Good for you for takin the time to try and learn to climb without spikes, and good luck to you in all of your careers.
