looking for a new handsaw

See if your local stihl dealer holds their handsaws in stock. A PS90 I believe. A little easier on the pocket than the silky's. Pretty happy with mine. Comes with a decent scabbard and is deadly sharp ( as with the silky's). However my blade is getting tired after a season of use and unfortunaltey they don't sell replacement blades. Try is out you can pick on up for about $40.

Why limit yourself to just one? I have an Ibuki and Sugoi for the big stuff, and a zubat for everything else. I have a zubat pole saw too.

I've heard of people having problems with blade breakage on the zubat, but if your careful there should be no problems. I put my first blade through about 2 years of pretty consistent use before it got 'less sharp' and I replaced it.

So, if I could only own one saw, it would be the zubat.

If you like the length of the Ibuki or Sugoi and love the Zubat, go to treestuff.com and buy a Zubat 390. At work we call it the sudo chainsaw. I never liked the Zubat until I got that one

I bought a corona pony saw 13" from sherrill through my vermeer dealer. The saw was 22. and the scabbard was 10. My stihl dealer stocks replacement blades for the ps90, its the same blade. Stihl wants 70-80 for saw and scabbard the pony saw has a rubber grip which has more comfort. The replacement blades run around 15 bucks, its the same blade I use on my poles too. They are super sharp its amazing how fast they will cut.

I dont see much diference between the pony saw and the silky. Why spend 60 when you can spend 30?

You going by looks, or actual use? Not digging you, just curious is all.

The blade that comes with the corona cuts both ways, most of the time you can pull it once and cut a small limb. I have never used a silky but the blades dont look much different. The one I use cuts like butter.

thanks for all the suggestions. i currently have the corona pony saw and it does the job but seems to fall short in the "feel" department. will look into the silky's for sure.

Metal is one of those deceptive things. Look at two chains and you won't think that the small one is twice as strong as a big one, until you find out what metal was used in chain, and how it was built.

Saws maintaining a sharper edge makes your body last longer.

In any case, replacing when not sharp is important for the long term, and you are less likely to have a too-much-force,drop-through-and-cut-yourself injury. Keep your old blades for root pruning.

I usually use a Silky Zubat for pruning/ removal on larger branches, and a Gomtaro for finer pruning, such as Japanese maples. Would like a Sugoi. My Corona was okay, but not a Silky.

Like my Silky Zubat better than any Fanno or ARS that I had in the past.

Also, don't care for a Felco handsaw. It has to be "learned". The back teeth are more aggressive than the front teeth, and its almost essential to start a cut with the front teeth. The back teeth grab so hard its hard to even get the first stroke started sometimes. A saw should not have to be thought about in that way prior to use.

The Zubat fits me well because I like curved blades. a curved blade removes the need for extra downward pressure on the back stroke and reduces strain on the forearms.

And the Zubat handle parts have never some loose yet.
