Looking for a beater farm truck, 4x4, dump, diesel... Gearboxes are a plus

I need a 4x4 truck for a large project in the Hills of TN. Just getting up to the farm will be a challenge. The road is an old river bed and it's between 40-60 degrees. Once I'm up there it's pretty flat in most places. However, I will be doing some clearing on a steep hillside. I can't picture getting a chipper up that hill without 4x4... Or working on most of the hill sides without 4x4...

Not a typical residential job with paved roads and such...So It doesn't have to be a pretty truck as it will likely live out on the farm for a while once it gets there... It might not even leave the farm.

The project will likely be a solid month+... Going to be building trails, clearing land, dumping the chips in a field to help recondition the soil, and building a barn. Then likely to plant fruit & nut trees in the area next season after the chips settle.

Price range could be between $1500-3,500 for a beater "farm truck" and 4,000-10,000 for something that would make a good truck for after the project. The truck has to be solid enough for me to get it from where ever you are to where I am. Then I need to pull my 6k+ pound chipper 590 miles through the mountains of NC and into TN.

1-ton C30, F350 dump or similar.

Thanks!

40-60 degrees is a pretty steep road. I would be surprised if anything could drive up a slope that steep.

You know, in all honesty I didn't take out a protractor and get my numbers right.

Let me go get one real fast....

Wow, thanks School Smart!!

Okay, so.... maybe closer to 33.741 at the low end, and 47.322 at the steepest.

So Mr. Kellytrimming,

Do you have a truck for sale?

Sorry GreenClimber,
My own trucks aren't even running at the moment.
47.322 degrees sounds more reasonable, and you can bet I am close to a protractor at all times, I keep one in my toolbox!
In all seriousness, this project you have going sounds like something I dream about doing in retirement. I am always looking at forestry land in the SouthEast on the internet, wishing I could buy. Is this your farm or are you contracted by someone?

Contracted by a customer who also because a good friend of mine too.

I am probably going to spend closer to $10k on something that is nice that I can end up using in fancy neighborhoods after the project. I have a beater 12" chipper that I "restored" and will hopefully get me through the job without causing any problems.

Skip the diesel, they are just not worth the added expense if you are not putting a bunch of miles on it. Also the older idi motors are just not very powerful. I would look for any one ton dually with a manual and a big block. Figure out wether you want efi or carbureted. Any of the older (pre mid 80s) trucks will have a bombproof drivetrain. The overdrive transmissions of the late 80's earlty 90's are generally not as stout as their 4spd counterparts.
