Looking at getting into splicing??

I seem to have alot of free time on my hands in this cold period, so I figured I would try and take up splicing. I'm looking at the training kit from Sherrill, but don't know of any videos, books, etc to get me started on the basics of this. Also, what would the basic tools be that I would need to begin splcing, or would they be included in the training kit. Thanks alot!!

I would start at samson's website. They have the best directions. Don't buy any special tools just yet. You can do most splices very well with a sharpie, good scissors, masking tape, measuring tape, and a coat hanger fid.

What are you looking to splice?

Thanks. Nothing fancy yet, but after I start to learn most of the basics, I would like to do 16 strand. Right now though, just 3 strand. Thats mostly all our lowering rope and misc rope. Have plenty to mess around with. After that, would like to move up to 12 strand or 16 strand, like Blue Streak, High-Vee, etc. Will also check out Samson's website. Thanks for the help guys!!

That's pretty much all I use except my fid is .049" piano wire.
I do use a tent stake and a sawed off (and polished) ice pick for separating and picking strands.

You can't go wrong buying a bunch of 1/2" or 3/8" Tenex (or Yalex) to get started making your own split tails, lanyard adjusters and slings. It's 12 strand hollow braid like Zac recommends.

Learn a good whiplock right away too.

Really?

That's great, I thought I needed special splicing tools.

So...tenex is 12-strand, could someone tell me which one of the 12-strand instructions from this site would be best for a tenex eye-eye prussick?

By the way...Good thread Ranger!

If you are near Pittsburgh, look up Rick "the real deal" Denbeau. He has been splicing for quite a while and could help you out with learning the ropes.

Thanks for starting this thread Ranger. Did my first splice this morning.....sweet! Off to gather up more old rope...the wife will not be impressed with all this rope migrating into the living room:)

I am pretty sure that the owner of American Arborist does his own splicing as well. Isn't he located a bit closer to you? Might not be a bad place to look for instruction.

If you can make it to Louisville we would love to see you at the Splicing Symposium in March.

Yeah i'm planning on getting out to american arborist real soon, its right on my way from my parents place to where i live now. I make that trip about once a month just have to set time aside to stop there.

Thanks for the post i'll ask when i go.

I would love to make it to Louisville, i'm not sure yet. Depends on the work load.

for a loopie I use the whoopie sling directions from the samson book as a guideline. Instead of making the eye splice at one end, just do another backsplice.

Does this sound alright?
