Log truck rear mount or behind cab mount

I was wondering anybodys opinion on a rear mounted Prentice vs. mounted behind the cab. Our company is considering the purchase and didn't want to make any regrets. How are your guys trucks set up? I know behind the cab will allow me to dump, but decreases my reach in front of the truck. Not being able to dump with rear mount but having more reach. Also backing up to a pile better on concrete with eight tires than being cab mounted with only front two tires. Have notice most of our concrete breaks with front tires. But will weight loaded obvisouly create same problem on back eight tires?

Breaking concrete may have nothing to do with your load. The concrete could have been poor quality. When you decide on the final configuration your truck builder should be able to give you the weight distribution for the setup.

When I had my clam truck it was behind the cab w/dump. The VERY few times that I wanted to grab out front or have an extended reach out back were offset by getting in and out of the dump in a jiffy. At the time I was considering getting a newer clam so I started to keep a mental log of how much time would have been saved with a rear mount. It seemed to me that it was better to have a front mount w/dump.

we had a prentice mounted on the rear on a Mack. The frame kept cracking,...we'd beef it up,....and it would crack again. We mounted it behind the cab and didn't have the problem any more. Keep it mind this truck had bunks, so whatever you loaded would have to be unloaded not dumped.

I wouldn't recommend mounting on the back no matter how convenient it may seem. Driving fully loaded with a cracked frame scares me.

Got to disagree with the other fellows, I have had 1 cab mount, and 4 rear mounts, the ability to back in closer to your loads or grab spars far out weighs the quick dump comments. yeh it may take a while to unload 5~10 minutes if you load large & long, the bitch is when you have shortys you might spend a half hour (we have a 44yard box)unloading. Grabbing over the cab sucks, in city situations parked cars wiil screw you more often with a frt then a rear. In 20 years I have never had a cracked frame (all double framed trks ) all my rear mt Trks have been IHC's . The longer reach and being able to back up much closer to a tree/pile - not to mention load a pup trailer behind you is far more valuable to me then a quick off load at the dump. Another small value is if the dump is crowded you usually can always find a spot to pile high. Cement - Scement stay off the edges, plywood when you don't trust it, avoid going on it whenever possible, frt or rear you still have the same max weight on your wheels when you pull out. /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I agree w/tnt...I had a cab mount. More chance of cab damage and less reach. We stretched a frame on a mack last year and put a rear mount. no cracks, again double frame.

We have two rear mounts on a short wheel base. And we load into two seperate dump trucks. This system works really well for us. The prentice loader can stay on the job and load both trucks instead of having to leave to unload.

Keep the loader loading, not traveling, right on! you do alot of contract removals? lot clearing's?
We run a (hook)roll off trk with our clamtrk on big jobs I can set a box on the ground and shuttle, two dump trucks for the price of one!

Yes we do a lot of removals and quite a bit of clearing. A lot of Chicago people are moving into our area and there is a lot of construction going on. We also use tarp that we lay on the ground underneath the stump grinder and use the clam truck to lift them and unload the grindings into the dump trucks.

rear mount for me... although I have wondered about cab mounting my crane so's I can put some ramps on the back and carry machines.

Hmm, the image-embedding code doesn't seem to be working just now. It's not that big a deal, though. It's better to be left as a clickable link since it's just the attachment to your post.

For whatever it's worth, every single self loading log truck in the Pacific Northwest has the loader mounted behind the cab. These are admittedly designed for woods work, but plenty of them see use in town off and on.

I've used both and each have it's advantage. One cab mount had a hitch for the chipper. You'd pull up to the job, off load the logs, blow the chips into the box put the logs back on top. A little dusty but worked well. Cab damage was definitly an issue. A rear mount was used for roadside work that had more chipping than logs. The chip truck would back into the loader so the operator could load wood in his and brush into the chipper. Saves tons of labor. And rarely had cab damage. You have to watch your front axle capacity with rear mounts since the loader weight is primarily aft and center of load weight is shifted forward 27" for a Prentice 120. If your builder doesn't get the axle configuration right, the Troopers will fund their pensions off of you! Stay away from the older 9" frames. 11" seems to hold up fine where the 14" seem to pop where they neck down over the axles if it's rear mounted. That could have been TreeDr's problem. Also double frame at a minimum. Triple frame heavier loaders such as the 120C's with the extendable jibs. Either way, pick your loads close to the truck and you won't have the frame popping.

If you're into private work, own a rear mount. If you're into commercial removals, go cab.
