Lock-stitching an Eye-Splice

In the Samson splicing instructions for a Class-1 Double-braid Eye-Splice the diagram shows the lock-stitching starts right at the base of the eye.

When I look at photos of pre-made lanyards sold on TreeStuff, it looks like the lock-stitches start at the 1/3 Fid length from the eye (point Z on the Samson instructions). This is the point where the rope tapers down and is not quite as stiff. I assume this is stitching the buried cover...

How far down the rope is the correct place to start the lock-stitches ?

In theory, you want to start the stitches right at the eye. They have a multiplying effect on the gripping strength of the splice, and that effect diminishes with distance from the eye. Practically, the rope can be so stiff you need to start them further from the eye, but when the splice is that stiff, it may have little need for the stitches anyway.

Your splice should not be relying on the stitching. If it is, there are other probs.

Do the stitching as close to the eye as is reasonable for you. If you are fighting the needle through and using pliers to get it out, then move down a little.

It sounds like if you follow the directions for making splices and complete your buries properly, they will be very strong before adding the lock stitches.

My understanding is, if your splice isn't strong enough without lock stitches, you must be doing something wrong. I view them really as more of a 'safeguard' and plan to always add them.

Thanks everyone for your help.
