local crane company breaks cable

Actually on that oak I set the chokers started making a cut when he beeped his horn, I shut the saw off and he started talking [pick a different word] about me going above where I had already cut halfway and cut the top smaller.. F$&k that, I told him if he wanted to talk that stupid sh&t I'll come down and punch him in the mouth, then I finished my back cut and he picked it up safely, nothing fell apart it was perfect. That man was trembling and shaking all day... WTF? Either he was scared or needed a drink neithe my problem.

So now Bauman refuses to work with Jon

[/ QUOTE ]

Can you really blame him? if I wanted to talk to a climber, and he told me he was going to come down and punch me in the mouth I don't think I would work for that company again, let alone the climber.

When people just shut up and do their job they don't get punched or hit with big sticks. I'm there to cut not talk. If wants to talk he can go to an AA meeting.

The reason I'm not dead is I learned early not to listen people who are not in your shoes. I make my own decisions about my life and his decision for me climb above a cut and cut it smaller was just insane and stupid.

Oh and I asked him first if he was ok with what I was taking and he was fine until I started cutting then he got cold feet. He must eat meow mix for breakfast.

Just judging by the video. Everthing about how he was moving that pick screams hack.
Not sure how he didnt hear/feel the strain on the crane as he two blocked it.
Bad cuts, rigging, or blind picks you might be able to blame on the team. But two blocking a pick in plain sight? Time for that opp to give up the seat for good

I can tell you when I am running our crane. Not a single pick is taken till both the climber and myself are perfectly happy with what's going on. I won't leave large dead pieces on any picks that go over anything of value. Now I am not on here enough to know big Jon personally. But from the last few post I have read and the attitude he comes across with. I would have packed up my crane and left before the first pick was made in the post he was talking about. I can't even get over the comment about punching the crane op in the face? Are you kidding me? Are you just an internet tuff guy or do you really go about work like this? If you were even on my crew and I heard this, it would be your last hour working for me or anyone local. Attitude like that does not belong in trees let alone working with a crane.

You always want to make sure you are safe, and the crane op is happy. If both those things are not met. You change things till they are. I am saying this as a person that has been on the hook for 8 years and running the crane for almost 3 years.

As for this video. It seems the op was paying attension to something else while forgetting he was still pulling cable in. It happens, I have done it a few times while rotating, checking for guys on the ground, watching my landing zone, ect. Unfortunately the anti 2 block must not have been working on the crane. This is the exact failure it was designed for. While the crane was revved that high for what reason I am not sure. I don't think he would have even known he 2 blocked it.

Ya... I don't like working with him much either LOL!

He's got a B.A. (bad attitude) LOL... no question about it.... throwing saws at groundies, who lock up lowering lines, ("a soft lock will get you cold cocked" is one of his sayings) threatening to bomb huge oak limbs through the clients roof, cutting as soon as the piece is tied off, whether or not the groundie is fast enough to grab the rope, not waiting for the groundies to stop traffic after he told them to, its bombs away into the street with cars coming... He'll bury the ground crew in brush and expects them to know how many wraps to take, and when to run it or hold tight without being told etc..

You want to run his ropes??? you better know what you're doing and bring your A game... Its like groundie boot camp... If you can't hang with that, call some else, cause he couldn't care less... If you can hang, you're gonna learn something.. that's for sure..

oh ya, I forgot about the time the real ground crew was a no show and he was working with two complete newbies... he decided since no one knew how to run the ropes, he'd just bomb right through the post and rail fence. He said fixing the fence was cheaper than paying a groundie for the day.. and he was right. fence repair was under $70...

I am guessing he runs the company? I can't think of a single crew leader that would put up with that crap for two minutes. We get things done fast and safe without that kind of b.s. Just reading the last few posts totally blows my mind.

I can definitely appreciate the old school, hard core sentiment here. But it's not "if" something bad is eventually gonna happen in terms of damage or dismemberment, it's "when." Right??

I was there and totally agree.. of course you could have stopped to massage his ego a bit. And I AM with you... Still don't know why he had second thoughts.. simple pick...

and the fact that he later rolled a big maple top on me shows what kind of operator he was.... That's the second time that company almost killed me in just as many days... the question should be "why would WE want to ever work with him again?"

The crane operator that Big Jon had that run in with..He said he was the new owner of Bauman Crane..

[/ QUOTE ]

I have only used him once, I usually use 2 other operators from them most of the time.

Um... A pick can only be as balanced as you the climber roigged it, if it rolled ontop of you don't blame the operator, he only has control of a load rolling if he sets it down on something and forces it over.

Wow, sounds like a horrible work environment!
Big Jon I think you need a big hug.
Discord between any two members of a tree crew on site multiplies the danger factor immensely in my opinion. It's already dangerous enough without crap like that.

People actually smile and are happy when they see I'm on the job. I have never hurt anyone on accident :-)

I've made other tree companies a lot of money. The only reason I go out to climb is to make money on job that would surely lost money if I didn't do it or I'm there to do something they aren't comfortable with.

When I'm not climbing these days I'm an instructor in Citation Sovereign jet. It's a little different environment. I can't just hand them a tube of Vagisil and tell them to move on.
