Lightning Rope?

Well the colour design of the rope certianly is attractive. It's unfortunate that change is usually met with skepticism, however fair. I'm sure we'll put this rope to the test over the upcoming months, some will whine about it and others will love it. I've always felt that arborist climbing line should be developed more in the direction of "less stretch = saved energy". So what's more annoying: rope weight, or rope elongation? Depends on who you are talking to. The smaller, lighter and less muscle bound climbers of our proffesion should enjoy this option.

...now for rigging ropes: who likes dragging a 200 foot piece of 'wet' 5/8" double braid around a big tree? Surely we can come up with weight savings in that department (unless of course you dig poking 800 pounds of rope at the end of 3 or four poles up over a crotch while swaying in the wind as every single muscle in your body is screaming... oops I just spurred out...

Ha! but we do love being the strongest folks around~

I recently was given a 150 hank of lighting to splice.Really easy to extract the core one grab and out it came.Simple splice crossover is so easy you cant believe it at first. Its impossible to snag the core when goin in to extract tappered cover for the crossover. One problem how do you taper the core after youve done the crossover. Its just a tube filled with that smart foam. The tube is made out of a cloth like material I think.Rope feels alot smaller than half inch-more like velocity or blaze.Has a real rough jacket kinda like neopro.Anyway I got it this far and would like to know the proper way to taper the core.it seems like you could just cut the tube down the middle and slowly taper your cut to full size at 5.5 inches-but they may have something different in mind.

I'll call this morning and try to respond back this evening. Their phone number is on their website. If enough of us call, they'll eventually just put the info up on their website.

Tobe, if you could email me the directions, I can post it on my website and give people here a link they could use until the treebuzz attachments are working again.

I talked to one of the splicers at Samson yesterday. Can't remember his name- it was something like Norman, or Nelson or Melvin- anyway...He explained that the rope should be spliced like a regular 16 strand, but rather than an 11" crossover, you just do a short 1" crossover.

I'm not sure if this is right, but this is how he explained it. I look forward to seeing what Tobe has to post.

I've considered taking apart my spliced lightning, but just can't bring myself to do it!

See if this sticks...

Nevermind, didn't work because pdf is 1.5 mb.

We have it posted on our site.
Go to the front page (bottom) and choose "SITE MAP"
> then move the scroll bar down to "INSTRUCTIONAL"
> choose "Lightning Eye Splice Instructions (PDF)"

Interesting that they say to make the taper the whole length of the cross over. You have to have a steady hand to make a cut that long in a core that thin. I can't wait to give this a shot.

Thanks for posting, Tobe! I never knew you guys had that instructional section on your website.
